We Craft Box Brings Art to the Doorstep

Todays News

Consumers are increasingly beset by a technological rental economy. Most people don’t own all of their content, instead, they subscribe to just about everything—music, movies, television shows and even food. Betsy Wild, who has background as a graphic designer and creative director, took the subscription model and applied it to We Craft Box, a service that hopes to help families expand their face-to-face quality time and have something tactile to show for their efforts. We Craft Box launches October 1st; SRQ caught up with Wild for a rundown on the why and the what.

SRQ: Where did We Craft Box come from? Wild: It stems from the problems I was having as a full-time working mom and missing that quality time with my kids. Crafting was such a big part of my childhood, so it was really important for me and my children to have that experience as well. And there are a lot of parents out there that need help in the creativity department—the biggest factor being the time it can cost to put craft projects together. There is also something important about going back to the roots of tactile elements of crafting for children. But, again, it’s more about the quality time you can have with your children through crafting. There’s something to be said about crafting something together. Some of my fondest childhood memories are from crafting with my mom.

When I open a Craft Box, what will I see? Each month is themed towards the holidays. October is our first one, so we have some fun Halloween activities. Not to blow the secret, but the first release may have some masks included in it with all the fun materials included—the pompoms, the crafting paper, glitter, pipe cleaners, etc. Depending on materials in the box and the level of involvement, there are two or three craft projects in each box. So if you wanted to spread it out, you could, or you could sit down and do everything in one sitting. I know my son wouldn’t [do it all in one sitting] though—I get about 5 minutes before he starts trying to eat the pieces.

What’s the next step for We Craft Box? I’m seeing it taking another step onto the digital platform and having kids and parents be proud to share their creations with each other throughout the month. Even though we’re providing shapes and cutouts to use, there’s no limit to what you can create with them. So we wanted to take the face-to-face sharing and connection from the inside the home and form an online creative community, like a Maker Share kind of thing or a show-and-tell.
