The entrepreneurial bug bites some earlier than others, a fact that will be on full display this Saturday in the courtyard of The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime. There, the Young Entrepreneur Market will showcase the region’s budding artisans and retailers, and 17 and younger, as they sell original art, jewelry, plants, inventions and refreshments. Whether from watching parents navigate the retail work or spurred by their own desire to make a living selling their own wares, the booths at the market offer exposure to the promise and logistical challenges of running a shop.
“My daughter Isabella is 11 years old and is setting up a shop called Lemon drop where she will sell earrings that she has handmade and she is selling lemonade too,” said Lisa Charnicharo. “She hopes to gain experience in retail sales and possibly follow in my footsteps.” It runs in the family. Charnicharo owns a boutique at the Bazaar and previously co-ran PJ’s Boutique, with family.
The entrepreneurs themselves feel excitement over the opportunity. Sophia Cavaluzzi runs the jewelry shop Petit Phia, where she sells earings hand-made from beads and clay. “I hope to gain a sense of what it's like to sell for a market, and to gain experience as well,” she said.
Brothers Douglas and Trey Hanna will run separate shops at the market. Douglas runs Google Shells, which sells goods made from shells found on local beaches. “As a result of participating in this event, I hope to make money and have fun because I enjoy when people come up to my table and want to buy my products,” he said. Trey runs Green Thumb, which sells houseplants he propagates. “I hope to make a profit from all of the hard work I’ve been putting into my business,” he said. “I also enjoy the atmosphere of it, and I enjoy bartering with other participants.”
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be free parking and masks are required.
