Architecture Sarasota has announced its 2022 Winter/Spring programming season, inspiring audiences about the merits of good design and celebrating Sarasota’s stature as a globally-recognized city of design. Earlier this week, The New York Times named the organization among  “52 Places for a Changed World.”  The Times article recognizes Architecture Sarasota’s role in promoting and protecting “…the most spectacular concentration of Modernist buildings east of the Mississippi.”  The annual list recognizes global destinations where visitors can be part of the solution to problems like over-tourism and climate change, which aligns well with the mission of Architecture Sarasota. This year’s Winter/Spring Architecture Sarasota program features a Modern Architecture 101 series, which explores the hallmarks of Modernism: new materials, new techniques, new ideas, and new cultural influences at the intersection of the Industrial Revolution, the colonial project and the expansion of class participation in cultural production. Given the ongoing challenges of Covid, Architecture Sarasota has created a series of en plein air and Covid-conscious events to enjoy this season, including yoga at Paul Rudolph’s iconic Umbrella House and architecture tours via kayak. Lovers of both culture and nature will enjoy viewing architecture from the water with both design experts and naturalists. Other events include guided tours of The Vision of Philip Hiss exhibition at the William Rupp and Joe Farrell designed Scott Building, headquarters of Architecture Sarasota, and monthly Iconic Homes Tours, providing an in-depth look at some of Sarasota’s most significant Modern houses.
