Crunchy, spicy, colorful, high-protein and veggie-rich, the Poke Tuna Bowl at Gecko’s Grill & Pub falls squarely under the “has it all” category of nutritious food. What are all the delectable positives it packs? The bowl is rife with shaved vegetables (like chunks of fresh brussels sprouts) in a power blend, some sliced avocado, diced rare yellowfin tuna marinated in poke sauce, Asian vinaigrette, wontons, sesame seeds and wasabi cream. Every bite is a vibrant, textural romp, and the bowl is somehow as filling as it is refreshing.
Created by Gecko’s Hospitality Group Director of Culinary Operations James Veldhouse and added to the menu about five years ago, the Poke Tuna Bowl highlights vegetables sourced from Honeyside Farms in Parrish (a Gecko’s organic farm partner).
In keeping with the Asian-inspired tuna theme at Gecko’s, there is also the Ahi Tuna (sesame-crusted and seared, with pickled ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, scallions and Asian noodles), and the Tuna Nachos (with wonton chips, wakame salad, wasabi cream and soy sauce).
Any ahi at the 1992-founded locale pairs with a Coconut Incident cocktail—a mix of Oak and Palm Coconut Rum from St. Petersburg Distillery (just over the Skyway Bridge), fresh mint,
house-made simple syrup, coconut puree, freshly squeezed lime juice and club soda. Crisp, cool and locally sourced—all the way around.
