Nonprofit Board Governance Expert Launches Deming Consulting

Business

Longtime local nonprofit executive Wendy Deming has launched Deming Consulting to serve as a strategic resource for nonprofits. The new practice provides customized capacity-building services that empower and strengthen nonprofit organizations and their boards. A nonprofit board governance and operations expert, Deming has more than two decades of experience in leadership roles at Sarasota-area nonprofit organizations. The skills and knowledge she has developed throughout her career inform the services offered by Deming Consulting, which include governance assessments, board development and training, policy and procedure development, and board and staff leadership performance evaluations. Deming also provides expertise on organizational culture, succession planning, operational efficiency and effectiveness, nonprofit mergers and collaborations, and civility in the boardroom. Customized consultations are available by request. Deming served as chief of staff and corporate secretary at Gulf Coast Community Foundation from 2002 to 2016 and as the foundation’s chief operating officer and corporate secretary from 2016 to 2018. Most recently, she held the role of chief operating officer and corporate secretary at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens from 2018 to 2023. In those positions, Deming managed operations and human resources functions during times of growth for both organizations. She served as a trusted advisor to the organizations’ CEOs and board members and ensured commitment to governance best practices. She has been involved in the planning and execution of strategic plans, board retreats, and accreditations, as well as a nonprofit merger while at Selby Gardens. At Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Deming created the “Invest in Incredible” capacity-building initiative to help strengthen the region’s nonprofit organizations. She developed and managed a cohort of 12 consultants available at a reduced cost to advise organizations on how to build capacity in areas including finance, human resources, communications, and governance. She also established and created the curriculum for the Gulf Coast Board Institute, a four-week intensive training for nonprofit board members, and entered into a partnership with national nonprofit governance experts at BoardSource to provide branded educational materials on governance best practices.
