There are just two weeks left in Major League Baseball’s Spring Training and Opening Day rosters are beginning to take shape. In Sarasota, Orioles top prospect Jackson Holliday continues to make his all out push to make the big league roster. The 20-year-old shortstop, son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday, had been absolutely electric this spring hitting .323/.344/.613 with two doubles, two triples and a home run as of Monday afternoon. On Sunday, he made his case loud and clear, with a no-doubt grand slam against the Blue Jays. Holliday, who could break camp as a second baseman or shortstop, flew through four levels of the Minor Leagues last year, all the way from Single-A Delmarva to Triple-A Norfolk. Down in Northport, the Atlanta Braves have continued to make roster cuts to what will eventually be their 26-man Opening Day Roster. 2022 draft pick Nacho Alvarez Jr., the Braves’ sixth ranked prospect per MLB.com, was reassigned to Minor League camp on Tuesday. Alvarez Jr. had a strong spring training, however, slashing .263/.391/.316 over 13 games and will likely begin the season with the Mississippi Braves, Atlanta’s Double-A affiliate. The Braves also cut outfielder Luis Liberato and infielder Luke Waddell. Waddell, the more intriguing of the two prospects, was drafted in the fifth-round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Braves and is set to start the year in Triple-A Gwinnett. Over in Bradenton, the Pittsburgh Pirates are faced with a number of decisions to make as they round out their roster over the next two weeks. Left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter, who enjoyed legitimate big league success with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2021 and 2022, bounced back on Monday after a discouraging start to the spring in his first three outings. On Monday, Falter attacked hitters head on, striking out four while allowing just one hit and one walk over three and two-thirds scoreless innings.
