Sensible to its namesake, the old fashioned is one of the oldest mixed drinks in the cocktail canon. A dated and doted-on stirred drink—iconically built right in the glass—saw a fruited version come into vogue after the Prohibition era (involving a cherry and orange slice, along with the muddling of a sugarcube or added simple syrup). That version remains widespread today, but we’re in the mood to champion some more elemental, progressive renditions that still allow the spirit-forward flavors of a smooth bourbon or rye shine, but also provide a bit of a twist (orange twist, if you will) on this classic libation.
