"We're reaching out to people and inviting them to listen and play and think with us."
The La Musica International Chamber Music Festival returns for its 31st year presenting premier musicians from around the globe with four concerts scheduled through the month of April, including one produced in collaboration with GuitarSarasota. Classical greats from Mendelssohn to Bach to Dvorak and Paganini are all slated to get their due at the hands of La Musica’s visiting performers, and while official festival concerts all take place in the Sarasota Opera House, daily rehearsals at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion will also be open to the public.
The festival kicks off in earnest April 3 at the Sarasota Opera House, with a concert featuring works from Mendelssohn, Webern and Strauss, followed by an April 6 performance comprising selections from Bach, Mozart and Dvorak. On April 9 the series continues with works from Schubert, Mendelssohn and Smetana and the festival concludes on April 12 with a special performance made in collaboration with GuitarSarasota, bringing the Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist Jason Vieaux to the stage for his La Musica debut performing pieces from Paganini and Boccherini. “There’s always something a little different,” says La Musica President Sally Faron. “That’s one of the things that makes it so interesting for people to come back.”
Selected by La Musica Artistic Director Bruno Giuranna and Associate Artistic Director Derek Han, the music for each festival is always carefully chosen in tandem with the selection of the visiting musicians, so that every piece plays to the strengths and interests of the performers. And joining Giuranna (violist) and Han (pianist) at this year’s festival are the violinists Federico Agostini, Claudio Cruz and Cecilia Ziano; violists Daniel Avshalomov and Hsin-Yun Huang; cellists JeongHyoun and Antonio Meneses; and aforementioned guitarist Vieaux.
But although the first concert is not until April 3, La Musica fans can start watching April 1, when the visiting musicians host their first rehearsal at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion. With all rehearsals open to the public, audiences are invited to enjoy the entire process, not just the finished product. “We’re reaching out to people and inviting them to listen and play and think with us and see how we do things,” says Faron. “We have an awful lot of people who come and trace a piece from its initial playing right to the polished performance.”
The La Musica International Chamber Festival concert series begins April 3 with subsequent performances on April 6, 9 and 12. Subscriptions for all four performances are $150 or single tickets are available for $40 each. Rehearsals at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion begin April 1 and run through the festival on every day except concert days. Attendance is free of charge for concert subscription holders or, for non-subscribers, $75 for a pass to all or $15 for each rehearsal.

For those who love a buttery, flaky fish, there's nothing that tops a superbly cooked, juicy slab of Chilean sea bass. With a flavor full and rich unto itself, each milky white, leaf-like layer that becomes dislodged from the whole with just a tender touch of the fork holds a supremely sweet, slightly oily, completely un-fishy morsel. Also called the Patagonian toothfish, the Chilean sea bass is actually no bass at all, but rather a cod icefish, the name gussied up in the 1970s to bring more appeal to American markets. Regardless of title, the meaty whitefish is just plain delicious, finding an aptly luxurious preparation at Selva Grill. The Mirin roasted sea bass almost falls apart from the filet proper—it's just that tender—with a slightly crunchy top, served with a Cusco corn custard flan, sautéed bok choy and a black bean puree.
USF Sarasota-Manatee will begin the year with high hopes as it introduces new academic and athletic programs to Southwest Florida. Situated along US 41 at the border of Manatee and Sarasota counties, the campus will enter the year with a mandate to raise $1 million in order to launch an NCAA women’s rowing team in 2018. Seeds for the team were planted years ago and last year the idea was included in the campus’ long-range vision, Focus on Quality 2020.
But now the idea is firmly taking root. Earlier in 2016 the proposal won the NCAA’s backing and when the team officially launches as a member of the American Athletic Conference, it will mark the first time an NCAA Division I team has been based in the Sarasota-Manatee area.
HealthFit, powered by Sarasota Memorial, became a Certified Medical Fitness Facility on December 16, a resolution set by Sarasota Memorial last year and testament to the medically sound prevention and rehabilitation programs the health system offers at its medically oriented fitness center on Clark Road. The certification, which is effective for three years, is the nation’s only quality designation for medically integrated fitness centers. It is awarded sparingly by the not-for-profit Medical Fitness Association (MFA) to facilities that demonstrate the highest standards for quality and safety, and HealthFit is the first facility in Florida to receive the certification. The certification process involves an in-depth on-site review of the facility and medically supervised, outcomes and accountability based exercise programs. The center’s team of health and fitness professionals help members, regardless of their health status, maintain active lifestyles that promote strength and endurance and prevent or manage chronic disease.
Girl Scouts from Bradenton/Sarasota and surrounding areas will soon be enjoying a new dock and pier structure at Camp Honi Hanta. Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida announced a $13,926 grant award from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation. The funds will be used to remove aging dock materials and construct a new dock and fishing/observation platform on the Braden River. Located in north Manatee County, Camp Honi Hanta hosts an average of more than 600 Girl Scouts and volunteers each month. In addition to canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, camp activities include archery, a climbing wall and low-ropes challenge course, nature trails, and a swimming pool. The 123-acre camp first opened to Girl Scouts in 1953.
Construction on the project is expected to begin sometime in January and will take approximately one month to complete.
