"I've always felt there was a need for a market in another part of the city for an alternative day."

[Growth]  Sunset Market Brings Rosemary Activity
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Could the Sarasota Farmers Market deliver the same sense of place to the Rosemary District as it has to Downtown Sarasota? Developers of the CitySide Apartments hope so, and worked with the downtown institution to set up an evening gathering over the next few months that could create opportunities for vendors and a new level of activity within the neighborhood. “We want to bring as much activity over into the District as possible,” says Bruce Weiner, owner of the CitySide Apartments.

The Sarasota Farmers Market organized the Rosemary Sunset Market the last two Thursdays, and plan to continue the event for the next two months. “I’ve always felt there was a need for a market in another part of the city for an alternative day,” says Phil Pagano, executive director of the Sarasota Farmers Market. The Thursday market now seeks to draw an evening crowd as well.

The inaugural event drew substantial traffic to the Rosemary neighborhood. “This has surpassed my expectations,” Josh Weiner of CitySide said in a promotional video for the market. Josh Weiner, son of Bruce Weiner, worked with Pagano over the past six months or so at setting up the evening event.

For the development, the market represents more than just a way get fresh produce. Bruce Weiner says a future phase of construction will include retail stores on May Lane, the privately owned road where the Rosemary Sunset Market takes place. As developers widen the sidewalks there, the hope is for May Lane to become a social center within the entire Rosemary District, an area of Sarasota where city leaders have incentivized concentrated residential development.

The long-term success of the market, of course, will depend on how venders do at selling their wares, Pagano says. The Sunset Market right now has space for 35 vendors, and like the Sarasota Farmers Market downtown, it includes a mix of farmers bringing farm product, prepared food and craft goods. Pagano says certain logistical adjustments were made between the first and second week, and the market will continue to evolve. The first market, he expects, will always draw traffic from people who want to see a new event, but sustained interest will determine if the market becomes a permanent fixture.

It’s not the first time the Sarasota Farmers Market tried a mid-week market. A Wednesday mid-day market previously happened at Five Points Park downtown.

The Rosemary Sunset Market is scheduled from 5-8pm on Thursdays through April 12. The market is located on Mat Lane between Cocoanut and Florida avenues.

[Museum]  Ringling Museum Reveals Ongoing $100 Million Campaign

The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art and the State Art Museum of Florida administered by Florida State University (FSU) have revealed an ongoing $100 million comprehensive campaign to preserve and expand its legacy for the 21st century and beyond. The Ringling Inspires: Honoring the Legacy and Building for the Futurecampaign has raised $92 million to date. It is an integral component of Florida State University’s Raise the Torch campaign.

The Ringling and Florida State leadership also announced a leadership gift of $5 million from the Monda family of Sarasota, to endow the Keith D. and Linda L. Monda Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art as well as an inspiring gift of artwork to the modern and contemporary permanent collection—Teo González’s mixed media Untitled #406 (2006), Yayoi Kusama’s monumental painting Infinity Dots (1993), Beverly Pepper’s steel sculpture Curve in Curve (2012) and a large work on paper by Richard Serra (1990).

“The Ringling Inspires campaign is vital to our long-term commitment to engage and welcome diverse audiences to the museum, and increase access to the treasures found in our collections, while preserving the incredible heritage of The Ringling’s campus. As we celebrate our landmark architecture, both historic and new, and continue to invest in innovative programs to expand our service to more than 415,000 annual visitors, we broaden our international impact and strengthen our role as a cultural leader,” said Steven High, The Ringling’s executive director. “We thank all who have generously supported us throughout this major campaign, including Keith and Linda Monda, who through their impactful gifts have signaled their lasting investment in the Art of Our Time at The Ringling.”

This final phase of the campaign is concentrated on three key goals: the preservation and restoration of Ca’ d’Zan; supporting community engagement and public programs that focus on inclusion and building long-term relationships with at-risk and underserved audiences; and expanding the global impact of The Ringling’s collections and scholarship through strategic acquisitions and innovative training programs for future museum leaders.

Among the projects funded thus far through The Ringling Inspires campaign are the recently opened Center for Asian Art and the Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion, the launch of the Art of Our Time initiative, the creation of the dynamic Keith D. and Linda L. Monda Gallery for Contemporary Art and more.

[SOON]  MUSIC: Striking Strings , March 8 – March 11

This concert features the striking work of Bartók and Schumann. Bartók's final string quartet is a curious and powerful work, ranging from playfulness to melancholy. As the music succumbs to the impending end, it transforms into something majestic in its resignation. Schumann's String Quartet No. 3 features a Clara motif, as he wrote it during his first marital crisis, a domestic issue with a modern ring to it. Typical for Schumann, the finale sweeps away all that has gone before in a surge of energy with a grand conclusion.
