The CareerEdge Funders Collaborative has been housed by a couple institutions over the past 10 years, but founding executive director Mireya Eavey hopes the initiative has found a permanent home. The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce last week announced it would it would partner with the effort. Eavey in May will join the Chamber staff as chief workforce strategist, a newly created position, and CareerEdge will move its operational functions there on June 18.
“It make perfect sense that the next progression of CareerEdge was to go to an organization that is employer focused,” says Eavey.
And Kevin Cooper, president of the Sarasota Chamber, says the organization for years has wanted to play a greater role in the workforce development space. He notes that one constant in local business needs, whether when the unemployment was at a recession peak of 11 percent or today when it has declined to 3.5 percent, has been connecting employers with the right set of workers. “Businesses are focused on the ability to get the talent they need,” Cooper says.
CareerEdge focuses on leveraging public and private dollars to provide opportunities for better jobs and higher worker wages in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Originally launched with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the group has worked with the Bradenton Downtown Development Authority and Central Community Redevelopment Agency, the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Bank of America, the Bradenton 14th Street Community Redevelopment Agency and the Manatee Community Action Agency. It’s picked up funding through the years from such national players as Microsoft and J.P. Morgan Chase as well as local entities including Sarasota County and the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation. For the past two years, it has operated out of United Way Suncoast, where Eavey was Sarasota Area President. The move also means Eavey has resigned her position at United Way, effective as of May 4.
Eavey and Cooper say they have talked about collaborating for sometime. The Chamber has embarked on other efforts like Talent4Tomorrow focused on building a better trained employee pool in the region. “The model for CareerEdge is based on employer demand so the closer they can get to employers the better,” Cooper says.
CareerEdge as an initiative can move to a new organizational head, and Eavey says certain programs targeting employee needs in Manatee and even in St. Petersburg can continue even as the effort moves to a Sarasota institution. And the initiative will still engage with collaborative efforts with United Way and other partners. “This is a deeper dive,” says Eavey, who believes working directly with Chamber members about their own needs will lead to more keen and sharply focused development efforts. 
NAMI Sarasota County (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the nation’s largest organization for individuals and families affected by mental illness, has hired Colleen Thayer as its first executive director. As executive director, Thayer will provide leadership for NAMI Sarasota County’s mission and for the management of all programs and activities of the organization. Thayer brings more than twenty years of management and advocacy to the position, including extensive experience in legislative and governmental affairs as well as communications and management work in nonprofit behavioral health. Thayer has a Masters in Management and Leadership and holds her accreditation in Public Relations and is a Certified Public Relations Counselor. She is currently a board member for Centerstone Florida and The Circus Arts Conservatory.
The McCauley-Brown Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County recently awarded Embracing Our Differences a $5,000 grant to help enhance its year-round educator workshops. A key component of its education initiatives, Embracing Our Differences' annual teacher workshops and retreats provide area educators with skills, strategies and resources to provide curricula and lesson plans relating to art appreciation, character building and diversity education. Teachers are also shown the importance of creating an inclusive and safe environment for all students. Approximately 160 teachers, representing 16,000 students, will participate this year in EOD’s educator workshops and initiatives. EOD’s initiatives for educators include art teacher retreats, creative writing workshops, lesson plan workshops and the Summer Diversity Institute.
Sarasota County has added three publicly available electric vehicle charging stations at county facilities, as part of a comprehensive strategy to support the adoption of electric vehicles and encourage sustainable transportation choices. Residents and visitors driving electric vehicles (EVs) now can charge up at any of 16 county-owned locations with charging stations installed. The newest stations, which bring the number of available ports to 24, are located at Englewood Sports Complex, North Port Library and Woodmere Park. County staff picked the latest sites to help balance the geographic distribution across the county. To reduce costs, the new stations are not connected to a charging station network, which would have required more expensive equipment and annual fees.
The law firm of Fergeson Skipper has announced Matthew S. Francis has joined the firm’s Litigation Department as an associate attorney. He is admitted to practice before all local and state courts in Florida, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Southern District of Florida and the Middle District of Florida. Francis’ areas of practice at the firm include civil and business litigation and appeals, business and commercial law, business organization, construction law and personal injury. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law and his B.S.B.A. in Economics from the University of Florida Warrington College of Business.
