"If you never give it 100%, you never really know what you're capable of."

[Visual Arts]  An Artist Carves His Path
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Staring down his 41st birthday, the server Jay Tyler Steele reflected on his journey thus far, with less than complete satisfaction. The son of two animators, a creative youth full of painting and photography, pen and ink and stone-stacking, had fallen to the wayside of a “pseudo-career” in fine dining restaurants that lasted longer than he’d ever intended and left little room for creativity. But Steele still had one artistic outlet in the carven creations he’d construct from reclaimed wood. With urging from his fiancée, he took the plunge. Today, roughly two months later, the artist Jay Tyler Steele operates his own booth out of the Bazaar at Apricot & Lime, selling his handmade artwork.

“I finally took control,” Steele says, “and took my life by the reins.” And, for Steele, the reins look a lot like a handheld jigsaw. Working from reclaimed pallet wood or construction materials, the artist transforms what would be scrap into three-dimensional works of art, carving silhouette images across multiple planks and utilizing the natural wood texture and wear and tear as part of the charm. He’s not the first, he’ll admit. “But I decided to expand the concept as far as I could,” he says. To that end, Steele eschews simple silhouettes, looking for more engaging, and challenging subjects, both for him and his audience. “A simple silhouette really isn’t enough,” he says. “There isn’t enough depth.” Still, despite making everything with only a handheld jigsaw, screwdriver and a paintbrush, his creations range from wildlife to landscapes, from Beatles portraits and Abbey Road crossings to kids flying kites and daydreaming mermaids. Not wanting to be pigeonholed, he hopes the breadth of subject matter will itself become a signature.

Not content with the carving alone, Steele then takes his work to the next level by installing LED lighting to backlight each piece. Not only does the modern lighting offer an intriguing counterpoint to the rustic medium, but, to Steele, brings the whole piece to life. “It doesn’t seem like just an inanimate object on the wall anymore,” he says.

“I finally took control, and took my life by the reins.” Steele says, looking to a future filled with creation and art, with an audience and a place at Bazaar at Apricot & Lime. And it looks good, with no room for regret. “If you never give it 100%,” he says, “you never really know what you’re capable of.”

[Community Foundation of Sarasota County]  2018 Giving Challenge Prizes Awarded
Murray Devine, MDevine@cfsarasota.org

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County recently awarded more than $240,000 in 2018 Giving Challenge grant prizes to organizations for a variety of special “Best Of” categories during the Challenge. An event was held on Friday, June 1st at Gold Coast Eagle Distributing to announce the recipients and award them their prize certificates.

For months leading up to the 2018 Giving Challenge, which happened on May 1st and 2nd, nonprofits worked on fundraising plans, communications campaigns, and planned events around the Giving Challenge in order to leverage the opportunity to generate unrestricted funding and develop relationships with new donors. Participating nonprofits were eligible to apply for prizes based on their strategy and success, such as best giving challenge video and event, best nonprofit-nonprofit partnership, best nonprofit-business partnership, best overall campaigns, and many more.

Volunteer committees made up of community leaders reviewed and judged the more than 430 applications submitted by the participating nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit organizations were broken down into three categories: Small (budgets under $100,000), Medium (budgets between $100,000 and $750,000) and Large (budgets greater than $750,000). The Community Foundation’s Board of Directors approved $200,000 to be awarded for this year’s prizes, with additional funding support Manatee Community Foundation, the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, and the Charlotte Community Foundation. The 2018 Giving Challenge raised more than $11.7 million in just 24 hours for 636 local nonprofits, thanks to support from The Patterson Foundation. In total, six combined Giving Challenges have helped to provide more than $40 million in unrestricted funding since 2012.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County is proud to partner with SRQ Media Group to highlight stories about community impact powered by philanthropy in our region, thanks to the support of donors and our local nonprofit partners. The Community Foundation is a public charity founded in 1979 by the Southwest Florida Estate Planning Council as a resource for caring individuals and the causes they support, enabling them to make a charitable impact on the community.
