[Ceviche]  Adventures in Fish To-go
Andrew Fabian, andrew.fabian@srqme.com

The words “fish” and “to-go” don’t quite belong together. People rarely ask for their leftover lobster to be boxed up at a restaurant and if you don’t finish a grouper sandwich, shame on you. Fish just seems to get fishy after it’s been out of the pan, broiler or baking sheet for 30 minutes, and even people that claim to love fish dislike when fish gets fishy. So, in an effort to add an element of adventure to my largely stay-at-home life, I decided to experiment with to-go fish.

For this experiment, I opted to go with a dish from Peruvian Grill by Maemi on the corner of Clark and Beneva, a dish that essentially continues to cook even as you lug it home in a bag: ceviche. The popular Peruvian variety adopted by other Central and South American countries is doused in leche de tigre, which translates into tiger’s milk. The milky marinade contains copious amounts of lime and orange juice, cilantro, garlic, sliced onions and chiles. Its acidity cures the fish, in this case corvina, and infuses it with all the tang and spice of the marinade. Traditionally, sweet potatoes and corn accompany the dish, and this meal was no different.

Still, I was nervous about letting it sit around too long, so I made sure to get to the restaurant a little early. The attendants inside were wearing masks though, unfortunately, the restaurant was empty. I ask about the popularity of the ceviche in the summer, when something cool, tangy and salty can cure a wicked hangover. “Yeah, it’s more popular in the summer,” says one of the masked attendants, “we usually sell a lot to vacationers on Siesta Key.”

My sense of adventure turned into anxiety as I seemed to get caught at every red light on my way home. Would the fish go fishy? Would the acids continue their chemical cooking and render the corvina inedible? No. The ceviche was everything I wanted it to be. I felt full, peppy and hydrated, ready to take on a landscaping project started three weeks ago (don’t judge). The fish was tender and cool, the marinade spiced to perfection and a touch sweet.

Peruvian Grill by Maemi is open Monday through Thursday from 11:30am to 9:00pm, Fridays until 10:00pm, and weekends from 12:00pm to 8:00pm.

[Barbecue ]  Smoqehouse Takes BBQ Global
Ariel Chates, ariel.chates@srqme.com

If there is one culinary culture the U.S.A can truly claim for its own, it’s a good old-fashioned barbeque. Sure we didn’t invent the barbecue, but as far as food culture goes, smoked meats and hefty sides have rooted deep down in American soil. Smoqehouse, a fast casual BBQ restaurant on South Tamiami Trail, decided the only way to improve upon greatness was to spin the globe to uncover flavors from around the world to take our beloved BBQ from classic to exotic. Chef and Owner Andy Kubes shares that Smoqehouse is “focusing on a world view of how different countries and cultures use smoke and fire to flavor and cook food.”

Along with wife Heidi Kubes, this duo wears virtually all the business hats, doing everything from PR to cooking to recipe development. Thought up five years ago, they are now operating two succesful opeartions in Florida. They have a second location on Anna Maria Island as well.

The first way they’ve made a household favorite newly fantastic is by looking up to our northern neighbor: Canada. Fries are delicious, but you know what’s arguably better than normal french fries? French fries smothered in a rich brown gravy and cheese curds. Kiss predictable cornbread to the curb and add poutine to your next BBQ feast. Smoqehouse layers their daily hand-cut fries with a luscious homemade dark-brown gravy and decadent mountain of cheesy curds.

Kubes says Smoqehouse is a scratch kitchen that tends to do things, as famous chef David Chang so eloquently puts it, "the long, hard, stupid way.” This can be confirmed, by their stupidly good Korean Beef sandwich. Another pin on the atlas of worldwide flavors, the thinly sliced beef is drenched in a sweet tangy Korean sauce and topped with a crunchy ginger and lime slaw.  Another international iteration includes The Islander sandwich which draws fusion flavors from the Carribean with grilled pineapple and teriyaki mayo.

Smoqehouse BBQ is a refreshing take on southern fare by integrating flavors and spices not typical of usual contenders like pulled pork. Next time you have a craving for something comforting with a twist, head to Smoqehouse and add some stamps to your palatable passport.

Smoqehouse is open Monday through Saturday 11:00am-8:00pm and closed on Sundays at both the Tamiami Trail and Anna Maria Island locations.

[Gulf Coast Community Foundation Named One of Count]  Gulf Coast Community Foundation Named One of Country's Best Nonprofits

Gulf Coast Community Foundation was recognized by The NonProfit Times as one of its Best Nonprofits To Work For in 2020. The national publication for nonprofit managers ranked Gulf Coast 22nd on its “top 50” list this year. The foundation ranked eighth in the small nonprofits group (15–49 employees) and, notably, was the only community foundation in the country on this year’s list.

“We know what a challenging time this is for just about every nonprofit and business in our region and beyond,” said Mark Pritchett, Gulf Coast’s President and CEO. “We are fortunate to be part of an organization that is positioned—and expected—to help lead our communities through the COVID-19 crisis. That’s a responsibility our team embraces. Commitment to our mission and living our values are intrinsic to Gulf Coast’s culture.”

“We received official word of our ranking from The NonProfit Times just a few weeks after we pivoted to a remote work model in response to COVID-19,” said Veronica Thames, Chief Operating Officer of Gulf Coast, who was interviewed by the magazine for its accompanying cover story. “As we made that transition, the first thing I heard from several of our staff members was, ‘People want to help, but they don’t know how. I’m so glad we can continue to support our community directly.’ I think that sentiment sums up the alignment of our team with Gulf Coast’s mission, vision, and values.”

This is the fourth time Gulf Coast Community Foundation has been selected as a “Best Nonprofit.” The most recent previous recognition was in 2017.

[Recognition]  Gulfcoast South AHEC Receives National Award

On July 14th, Gulfcoast South Area Health Education Center (GSAHEC) was recognized by the National AHEC Organization (NAO) with the Dr. Andy Nichol’s Social Justice Award. GSAHEC’s Advanced Cultural Competence Education & Support Services (ACCESS) Program aligns with Dr. Nichols’ vision of social justice and health for all by helping to overcome the cultural and linguistic barriers that promote health disparities in healthcare and community settings. As nearly 30% of Florida’s population speaks a language other than English, addressing social justice in Florida’s healthcare systems is a need that GSAHEC continues to address through the ACCESS Program. The ACCESS Program provides Occupational Spanish, Cultural Competency, and Medical Interpreting training to healthcare, human service and public safety professionals, and those seeking to enter these fields. “It is our honest hope that through the ACCESS Program we can contribute to the education of healthcare providers and community members about the need and benefits of language access and cultural competency for all.”

[Virtual Learning]  Punta Gorda Symphony Partners with Local Youth Services for Virtual Music Camp

Punta Gorda Symphony is pleased to report that its first Virtual Music Camp began last week, on Monday July 13, without a hitch! At 10:00am, the first session of online campers met their instructors and Camp Director Beth Morrison before being assigned to break-out sessions for small-group music lessons. They repeated this schedule on Wednesday and Friday and will continue through July 31. Due to COVID-19 concerns, PGSymphony chose to forego its regular two-week in-person camp and develop something new.

Thanks to partnerships with Boys & Girls Club of Charlotte County and with Guardian ad Litem, a total of 30 youth registered for this year’s Virtual Music Camp. Thanks to Cadence Music in Fort Myers, 22 youth received free loaner instruments for the duration of the camp. This year’s campers include four from Lee County, and even three students from Illinois and Virginia, referred to the program by their grandparents who are patrons of Punta Gorda Symphony.

“It was important for us to make this experience available without barriers,” says Executive Director Craig Badinger. Boys & Girls Club and Guardian ad Litem provided coordinators, space, and computers, and generous sponsors underwrote registration fees when necessary. “In a time like this, we believe it’s important to provide our young musicians and their families with a worry-free experience. Of course, we want them to have fun, too!”

“Music is a transformative force, helping to heal and giving a creative outlet to all who pick up an instrument,” says Jessica Stanfield, Executive Director of Guardian ad Litem Foundation - 20th Judicial Circuit. “We are thrilled so many of those we serve were able to participate in this innovative camp opportunity. Children all over Southwest Florida, some of whom had never touched a musical instrument, are able to experience pure joy through this partnership with the Punta Gorda Symphony, and for that we are so thankful.”

[Environmental Science]  New College Microbiome Project Receives Major Support from Conservationist Elizabeth Moore

Although microbes are invisible to the naked eye, they play a huge role in the health of ecosystems and individuals. A new initiative at New College of Florida will help build a local baseline data and shed light on microbes in urban environments.

In the summer of 2019, Erika Diaz Almeyda, an assistant professor of biology and environmental sciences at New College of Florida, began studying the impact of human land-use decisions on urban microbiomes. This initiative was made possible by an initial $15,000 donation from conservationist Elizabeth Moore, a Florida House Institute board member and president of TREE Foundation.

“Thanks to Elizabeth Moore’s funding, our team has achieved some important insights,” says Diaz Almeyda. “We’ve also gained valuable local data on soil characteristics and management, plant biodiversity, and soil microbial diversity across the Florida House Institute’s demonstration grounds. From an educational perspective, this project has also offered invaluable opportunities for hands-on student learning and development in a real-world setting.”

According to Diaz Almeyda, microbes play a vital role in nutrient cycling and ecosystem resilience. A healthy ecosystem depends on a healthy microbiome. Microbial health is determined by a wide range of factors, including biodiversity and nutrient transport. Scientists have studied this complex web of microbial life in remote and wild locations. Even so, the biodiversity of urban microbiomes has received scant attention.

“Cities are often seen as lifeless, artificial spaces,” notes Diaz Almeyda. “The truth is, they’re filled with life. Along with their human population, urban environments also support a web of plant and animal species, which in turn depend on a healthy biodiverse microbiome. We’re deeply connected to that web of life — and that’s why our research is so important.”

[Books]  Music Compound to Present Young Author for Virtual Reading Session

As part of its popular "Rock Your Summer Reading" initiative, Music Compound presents young author Sienna Alfano, 8, who will host a live reading session on Music Compound's Facebook page (and YouTube channel) on Thursday, July 30 at 2 pm. Alfano has been writing short stories since the age of 3. She is an avid reader who particularly enjoys mystery novels, such as the Nancy Drew stories, which served as the inspiration for "The Mysterious Notes." The book – which she started writing at the age of 6 – follows the adventures of Sara Stoneshelf, who keeps finding notes in unexpected places around her hometown of New York. Each note contains a clue that sends Sara on a wild goose-chase. But will Sara find all the notes in time for her birthday?

In her spare time, Alfano enjoys reciting poetry, riding her bike, and baking with her mother. She lives in Sarasota with her parents and her huge collection of books. Learn more or purchase her book at siennawrites.com; a limited number of signed copies of her book will be available at Music Compound’s Cattlemen Road location.

"As we continue with 'Rock Your Summer Reading,' an ongoing goal is to align ourselves with young authors as well as education enthusiasts," says Music Compound owner Jenny Townsend. "I have known Sienna since she was just 4 or 5, when she attended Music Compound’s summer camp. She is a remarkable young lady and I hope community members will tune in to enjoy her book reading!"

[Music]  Rock Band formed During COVID-19 Pandemic Releases New Single

The Grouper Cheeks (www.thegroupercheeks.com), announced the release of “Quarantine Hair,” their follow-up single and music video. The song was written by The Grouper Cheeks’ frontman, Kenny Goldstone of Nokomis, Florida. The band’s debut single and music video “Social Distance” garnered thousands of views on the band’s YouTube channel and Facebook page and raised over $20,000 for MusiCares.

The Grouper Cheeks are dedicating the music video of “Quarantine Hair” in celebration of the life of Meredith Cochie Ross who passed away on June 13, 2020 after a tragic traffic accident. Meredith was a dear friend and fan of the band, and had submitted photos featured in the music video. Meredith is a Lemon Bay High School and University of Florida alumnus with degrees in journalism and mass communications. A former employee of Sun Coast Media Group, her hometown newspaper, she was most recently a 10-year educator at Full Sail University. Meredith is survived by her husband Erikk and son Everett.

“Meredith was the original Grouper Cheeks superfan,” said Matt Pengra, the band’s keyboardist. “Her larger-than-life catalytic energy and her fierce passion for creatives and creative expression has sparked so many of us individually, and has been a source of inspiration for the band. With Meredith’s spirit with us, we dedicate our newest music video ‘Quarantine Hair’ in her honor.”
