Safety protocols, a reduction in COVID-19 infections and pent-up demand bring another wave on re-openings this week to downtown cultural venues in the greater Sarasota area. The Venice Symphony will return to an indoor stage this week. And fine dining locales like the Bijou Garden Café reopen their doors weeks after singers kicked off a new season at the Sarasota Opera House.
"Bijou Garden Cafe has always been directly influenced by the arts organizations in Sarasota, not just because the venues are our close neighbors. There is a strong synergy between the downtown restaurants and the theaters,” said Sharon Carole, owner of Bijou Garden Café and of Sage.
It’s a reminder how thorough connected the economy in downtown areas is tied to the cultural destinations.
“We know that so many of the theatergoers are also our patrons. When they plan a night out to see a show, opera or ballet, our restaurants are a big part of that as well. That's one of the reasons why our team has worked so hard to make sure our doors are open as live theater makes its big comeback,” Carole said. “Sarasota is an arts community first, and I believe I speak for all of the local restaurant and business owners when I say I am so grateful and proud to see live entertainment come back."
Further south in Venice, the symphony will return to The Venice Performing Arts Center for performances Friday and Saturday of “Brahms and the Boys.” That kicks off a season running until May. During that time, Music Director Troy Quinn has programmed every concert postposed during the 2020-’21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After being away from the hall and our community of supporters for more than a year, we are beyond thrilled to be back performing live,” said Venice Symphony President and CEO Christine Kasten. “From the musicians to the staff, volunteers and Board, we are committed to making our 48th season a memorable and uplifting experience, showcasing our outstanding orchestra and Troy Quinn’s innovative programming.”
The Symphony is the Center have requirements in place for patrons to wear masks inside of the building. The Sarasota Opera House adopted the #SafeArtsSarasota initiative standards to require patrons show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test administered in the last 72 hours before a show, and is also requiring masks while guests watch performances.
Meanwhile, organizations like Florida Studio Theatre announced plans for family programming. Its “Deck The Halls” event kicks off later this month after a two-year hiatus. Saturday and some Sunday shows kick off beginning on Nov. 27. Masks are required for everyone age 6 and older, and the vaccine-or-recent test rules apply for patrons 12 and older. 
Bijou Garden Café recently announced a reopening date of Nov. 16 after being closed for three months due to renovations. In early 2021, Sharon Carole, owner of The Realm Restaurant Group, purchased Bijou Garden Café from owner and chef J.P. Knaggs. The original, iconic building was built in the 1920s and served as a gas station before transforming into a restaurant in 1986, and has remained a popular option for theatergoers and arts patrons for a pre-show meal downtown.
Extensive renovations and restorations were made to the building in September—including the removal of several walls to create a more open space, the relocation and restoration of the classic bar, the addition of garden views from every table and bringing in a new baby grand piano, among other updates. Once open, the restaurant will feature some refreshed menu items as well. In addition to some of the classic favorites from the Bijou Garden Café’s previous menu, such as Shrimp Piri Piri, Escargot Bourguignonne and Potato Au Gratin, Christopher Covelli, executive chef at Bijou Garden Café, is implementing new menu items inspired by the garden with more greens, vegetarian and vegan options. “The menu has a French and Californian influence that will very much match the setting of the building,” says Covelli. “We used many of J.P. Knaggs’ original recipes and while they’ve changed over the years as different chefs have evolved them, we believe people will really enjoy the authenticity and comfort they bring.”
The restaurant seats 134 people with indoor and outdoor dining, and is open Tuesday through Thursday from 5pm - 10pm, and Friday through Saturday from 5pm - 11 pm. To make a reservation, visit BijouGardenCafe.com or call 941-366-8111.

Residents in the Lakewood Ranch community and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to receive free dental services at Smiles at Lakewood Ranch on Saturday, December 11. Dr. Ana Monzin, Dr. Jacob Berger and team at Smiles at Lakewood Ranch will be improving the oral health of the community as part of Free Dentistry Day, a day dedicated to providing free dental care to the growing number of Americans without dental insurance. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 108 million Americans are living without dental insurance.
“We understand that many people in our community and across the nation haven’t been to the dentist for a long period of time. Some don’t understand the importance of dental health, but more often than not, they don’t have the financial means,” said Dr. Monzin. “This event is a great opportunity for us to share our time and resources with those less fortunate and give back to the community.

As this year's guest speaker for Forty Carrots' Free Community Speaker Event, Dr. Tina Payne Bryson touched on prominent talking points for parents, including 'The Power of Showing Up'. Bryson is the author of the Bottom Line for Baby and co-author (with Dan Siegel) of two New York Times Best Sellers—The Whole-Brain Child and No-Drama Discipline—each of which has been translated into over fifty languages, as well as The Yes Brain and The Power of Showing Up. She is the Founder and Executive Director of The Center for Connection, a multidisciplinary clinical practice in Southern California. Dr. Bryson conducts workshops for parents, educators, and clinicians all over the world, and she frequently consults with schools, businesses, and other organizations.
In an interview with Wes Roberts in our December 2021 magazine issue, Dr. Bryson shared her thoughts on parenting in today’s chaotic world. In the excerpt below, she speaks to the way parents and caregivers can create a securely attached relationship with their children by using the four S’s, so that the child will feel at home in the world as they interact with others.
The first S stands for safe and that really is about protecting our children from harm, but it's also creating a safe harbor away from the stress and the chaos of the world. Our homes, our relationships are safe harbors for our children. The second S is for seen which is about tuning into the mind behind the behavior and helping them feel seen. Soothe is to help comfort, nurture, calm them when they're really in distress. So for example the child doesn't want to get out of the bathtub, we practice seen by saying, you're really disappointed about getting out of the tub. So we’re connecting with the mind behind the behavior of the feelings he has and then soothing him, saying “It's okay, if you need to cry, I'm right here with you.” Then wrap the towel around him and comfort him to settle him down. When kids have enough of this repeated they develop that fourth S of security, which is really where their brain wires to know that someone's going to show up for them and then they learn how to show up for themselves, how to keep themselves safe and seen, and understand themselves and soothe themselves. There are a lot of things in the world as parents that we can't control, and that's, that's hard for us to accept, but it's the truth. So what we want to do is what we can within our control to give our kids the highest capacity they have and the most resilience possible.

Realize Bradenton announced the release of Tales from the Table: Flavor, Families, and Friends. This storybook cookbook features recipes and stories with a twist of education. Beautifully illustrated by local artist Don Brandes, this book includes ten recipes from the Bradenton community and the special memories behind them. Through food, Tales from the Table connects us to each other and our heritage.
In the book's introduction, local historian Cathy Slusser states, "When we come together over a meal, what we eat is important because it shares a piece of who we are and what made us that way. It reminds us that while we are all from somewhere else, we are also humans, dependent on food not only for survival but connection."
In addition, each recipe includes "Learn Together" activities that were created by a local elementary school teacher to bring fun and education into the kitchen.

During this month’s professional development program, the Central West Coast Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association (CWC-FPRA) will present “Newtown Alive: Storytelling as the Key to Preserving, Sharing, and Celebrating History” on November 18, 2021, from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm at The Bazaar at Apricot and Lime (821 Apricot Avenue, Sarasota). The event will feature Vickie Oldham, President/CEO of the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition (SAACC), who is leading an initiative to open an arts, cultural and history center in Newtown.
In this discussion, Oldham will share Newtown Alive’s evolution from its inception in 2014 to the present and how this groundbreaking project is causing Sarasota to take a second look at Newtown, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Using traditional and multi-platform storytelling tools, Newtown Alive features the early pioneers who built Sarasota's infrastructure, education about Newtown’s historic landmarks, and the neighborhood’s history. In addition to local acclaim, the project has received local and state awards.
“Storytelling is one of the most powerful forms of communication, cultural heritage and education,” says Melanie Reda, APR, CPRC, president of the CWC-FPRA. “We are grateful for the opportunity to host Vickie Oldham and hear directly from her on how storytelling is being used to bring attention to the rich history of Newtown.”

Sarasota construction management firm, Firmo Construction, has been hired to build a Fairfield Inn by Marriott in Alpharetta, a city within the Atlanta metropolitan area. A joint venture between Hawkeye Hotels Inc., and Savannah-based hospitality management and development group, HOS Management, the Firmo Construction and HOS teams celebrated the start of the construction process for the new hotel with a groundbreaking ceremony the morning of November 10.
“We’re excited to commence our third project in partnership with the HOS Management team, as well as commemorate our first step toward national growth as a company by celebrating our first project awarded outside of Florida,” said Eric Collin, President of Firmo Construction. “With the relationships and partnerships we’ve already established in Georgia, our team is ready to bring our expertise in hospitality construction to this new tourism opportunity.”
Bringing decades of experience with the Marriott brand and the hospitality industry, Firmo and HOS Management, in partnership with Elevate Architecture Studio, will deliver this Marriott model just a few minutes away from downtown Alpharetta. After making the difficult decision to cancel last year's festival due to COVID-19, The Siesta Key Chamber is excited to announce the dates for the 2021 festival! This November 12-15th, twenty-four premier master sand sculptors will be competing for 1st place on Siesta Beach. The Siesta Key Crystal Classic is a visual and cultural arts festival now in its 11th year and has hosted over 300,000 attendees on the best beach in the USA! In only 24 sculpting hours, (spanning the four-day event), the master sculptors create sand masterpieces and transform the always beautiful Siesta Beach into an amazing outdoor art gallery. And it is more than just sand...the festival also features live music throughout the event along with a large village of shopping and food and drink vendors. Other activities include the popular three-day Quick Sand competition, sand sculpting lessons and an amateur sculpting competition. The festival will be open Saturday night until 9 pm with live music by Fleetwood Max, The Definitive Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band. A full live music line up will be announced in October. Siesta Key Crystal Classic
Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) is hosting its annual golf tournament, Scramble for SPARCC, at Longboat Key Club, Harbourside Golf Course on Monday, November 15, 2021. With the support of sponsors, community donations and golfers, the tournament raises funds to help provide life-saving, free and confidential programs and services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Entry fee is $175.00 per person and includes green fees, individual carts, happy hour light bites, beverages (cash bar available) and player awards. Registration opens at 11am with a shotgun start at 12pm to kick off the 18-hole scramble. Dwight Icenhower and his Blue Suede Band are back at Venice Theatre bringing you the ULTIMATE Tribute to the KING! Dwight is considered one of the best Elvis tribute artists in the country today. He has mastered the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s eras of Elvis’ career and had won a myriad of national Elvis awards. In 2018 Dwight was hand picked by APPLE to be the face of their new worldwide advertising campaign. The ULTIMATE Tribute to the King will show on November 14 and 15 at the Venice Theatre.
Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a collaborative, student-centered teaching method that improves critical thinking skills and fosters inclusive community-building dialogue through facilitated discussions of visual images. A huge bonus to VTS is you do not need special art training to use this strategy and the pedagogy is developmentally appropriate across all age and learning levels. Workshop participants will experience VTS first hand and explore opportunities for student application. This workshop is led by Embracing Our Difference's Education Director, Ben Jewell-Plocher and will take place on Saturday, November 13, December 11, and January 15, 9am-12pm at Easterseals of Southwest Florida, 350 Braden Ave. It is designed for educators, administrators, and aides who work in ESE, Life Skills Education, or who work with neurodivergent individuals and/or individuals with disabilities. We welcome all participants, and will discuss artistic adaptations based on educational and community spaces. The cost of this workshop is $5-$25. Join Guitar Sarasota for a six-concert series that showcases local and regional musicians who perform a 45-minute concert, followed by a question and answer session. Duo Excelsa with Erol Ozsever, Guitar, and Francesca Arnone, Flute, will take place at 7:30pm on Monday, November 15, 2021 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. From performing at National Sawdust to St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and creating successful flute events and seminars at universities, Ms. Arnone has partnered with presenters and schools to program concerts and design experiences that help audiences and musicians discover and access the full range of human emotions to expand our awareness of music as an inclusive, unifying experience. Dr. Erol Ozsever began playing guitar at age 10. After witnessing performances from world-renowned concert artists, he began studying classical guitar. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music Degree from Middle Tennessee State University, and then went on to earn a Master and Doctor of Music Degrees. He has received numerous awards including the top prize for graduate strings in the 2008 Indianapolis Matinee Musicale and 1st prize at the 2009 Rosario Guitar Competition.
