Thursday Family and Recreation Edition
"Our people are amazing, as will be this event. It's our first year, and it will only get better and better."
Move over Woodstock, the kids are taking over!
This Saturday, October 22nd, from 11 am to 5 pm, NewGate Montessori School will be sponsoring Kidstock, the family-friendly music festival by kids and for kids. Live entertainment with kids performing will be the focus of the event that will feature food trucks, face painting, air-brush tattoos, a photo booth, hula hoops, bungee jumping, a caricaturist, yard games and family fun, all in a carnival-like atmosphere.
Ten acts are lined up for the day, some bands and some dancing performances. There will be a silent auction online in which families and friends of NewGate have sourced some amazing finds including food from around the world, spa treatments, restaurant gift cards, and art. All proceeds will benefit NewGate School, an independent, non-profit, international, college-preparatory Montessori school for students from infants through high school.
Kidstock is open to the public and volunteers are encouraging attendees to dress in their most authentic and creative 60s attire. If enough people participate, there will be a contest with a groovy prize awarded.
Event organizers are asking for donations from small baking businesses who would like to donate packaged goodies to sell. The treats will be displayed along with the baker’s business card.
“Due to the hurricane, planning this event has had new challenges, but we have such amazing volunteers and energy behind this,” says parent volunteer/event co-organizer, Laura Sawyer. “From the generously donated venue, to sourcing food trucks, to gathering items for auction….our people are amazing, as will be this event. It's our first year, and it will only get better and better.”
Kidstock will take place at 12705 Upper Manatee River Road Bradenton, FL 34212. Parking for the event will be at Mill Creek Baptist Church 12713 Upper Manatee River Road and the entrance to the event will be located in the back side of the parking lot. Some seating will be available but attendees may also bring their own lawn chairs.

All Candy will be individually wrapped & sealed and will be distributed by people wearing gloves to ensure safety. There will also be fun and games, as well as public safety equipment & first responder vehicles on display. Please visit www.ManateeCrimeStoppers.com for more details. This well established event consistently attracts over 3000 children & families each year. Since this year’s event will again be in the Mosaic Arena at the Manatee Fairgrounds, a well-known venue with plenty of fresh air and space for social distancing, we anticipate another record crowd. The event not only provides children and families with a safe alternative for “Trick or Treating”, but also information for parents about community organizations and agencies which serve Manatee County families. Rather than going door to door in unsafe neighborhoods which lack sidewalks and streetlights, families can visit the Manatee Fairgrounds and enjoy an enhanced Halloween experience. Crime Stoppers is providing a venue with plenty of security, supervision, games, activities, and candy while also promoting public safety & community services which are available to families. Be sure to have the little ones (11 and under) dress up and participate in the Best Costume Contest!”

Wellen Park is expanding its assorted mix of Downtown Wellen restaurants and retailers with its newest addition, Foxtail Coffee Co. The Florida-based coffee shop company was founded with two simple principles in mind: offering the freshest roasted coffee from around the world and having an inviting, comfortable environment for guests. The Downtown Wellen location is franchise-owned by Jesse Davis, a franchise partner for Foxtail Coffee, and this will be his third location. The design for each location differs, but the coffee shops typically feature combinations of exposed beam ceilings, subway tiles, distressed wood and industrial-style fixtures to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. According to Davis, each location’s individual style is inspired by the local community. All coffees are ethically sourced and exclusively selected from small organic local farms in Ethiopia, Mexico, Columbia and Honduras. The company roasts several varieties in their Winter Park warehouse, where they also keg cold brew and supply wholesale coffee to restaurants. Foxtail coffee is also bagged and sold by the pound in their cafes. The Downtown Wellen cafe will span nearly 1,660 square feet and offer indoor and outdoor seating, with decor, murals and artwork echoing the beauty of both the Venice and North Port areas. As a craft cafe and interactive community space, Foxtail will also offer seating at a bar where customers can interact with the baristas and watch their drinks being made – everything from lattes to cappuccinos, macchiatos, cortados and more. For coffee purists, a myriad of brew styles will be offered, such as French press, Aeropress, siphon and pour-over. Cold brew and nitro cold brew will also be available. Foxtail Coffee will also serve beer and wine, sweet treats and morning and afternoon bar bites, as well as live entertainment. Expected to open in early 2023, the coffee shop will be open daily 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. To learn more about Foxtail Coffee, visit www.foxtailcoffee.com or find them on Facebook or Instagram. To learn more about living at Wellen Park, call 941-960-7805, go to wellenpark.com or visit the Welcome Center at 12275 Mercado Drive in Venice, Fla. The Welcome Center is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Today, the Van Wezel Foundation announced Adrian Anantawan as its newest artist-in-residence. Anantawan is a world-class violinist and educator, was born without a right hand, and now advocates for people with disabilities to raise awareness about issues of access and equity in arts communities. “The Van Wezel Foundation is pleased to announce Adrian Anantawan for this year’s artist-in-residence program. As a multi-talented musician, educator, and advocate, we’re excited that Adrian will join us to illuminate the power of the arts,” said Cheryl Mendelson, CEO of the Van Wezel Foundation. “Attracting performing artists like Adrian allows the community to engage in a year-long exploration of accessibility in the arts. This is exactly the type of programming that will make the new Sarasota Performing Arts Center a place for ideas, a place for artists and a place for you.” The residency will begin with meetings with community partners and a Strings Master Class on October 25th. Anantawan will return to the area early next year to work with social service organizations, schools, the community, and health organizations to explore accessibility through the arts. The Residency will also include a free public recital at the Bay.

Siblings Mordy and Jane have a problem. Their dreadful, centenarian grandfather is an emotional and financial tax on the family, and he just won’t die. Scheming almost entirely via sarcastic and misspelled text messages, the siblings hatch an outrageous plan to relieve their family of their grandfather’s burden. The annual Stuff The Bus event, which was started in 2009, was created through the kind hearts of the School District of Manatee County Transportation Staff. They wanted to give back to the community and knew of “Stuff the Bus” events in other cities and suggested placing one school bus in front of one Publix store in Manatee County. The leadership of Publix thought it was a great idea and requested a bus at every Publix store in Manatee County. Since 2009, nearly 1.1 million pounds of food has been donated through the Stuff The Bus food drive. Since the first Stuff the Bus event thirteen years ago, this event has evolved to include many Community Partners, including: United Way Suncoast, Publix, Herald-Tribune, the School District of Manatee County, and of course, the Transportation Staff of the School District. We are thrilled to have Mosaic as our presenting sponsor this year. All proceeds and donated food will benefit The Food Bank of Manatee, a PLUS program of Meals on Wheels PLUS. Please stop by your local Publix in Manatee County to support this event. Goal: Raise 150,000 pounds of food to feed Manatee County residents! All Manatee County Publix Locations.
