Music Compound, the local Sarasota music school on Cattlemen Road is celebrating the opening of its new Music Compound MAN Bradenton location on Saturday, January 14 with a Family Fun Festival. From 12-4 p.m., guests can enjoy live music by students of all ages, a bounce house, kids' activities, a food truck, beer samples courtesy of Big Top Brewing Company, and tours of the facility. This event, which takes place from noon-4 p.m., is free and open to the public.
Music Compound opened its Bradenton location (located at 4740 SR64, just west of I-75 in the Braden River Business Park) this past summer, offering a two-week Introduction to Music Summer Camp in late July. The expansion was necessary as its Cattlemen location was fully booked. The new 4,500-square-foot space features 13 spacious studios and a music lounge, where young students can socialize, decompress, and make the transition from their time in school to the music enrichment programming. The location features lessons for kids, including Kidz Rock and Modern Band programs for area youth wanting to grow musically and socially. These programs encourage team building, boost confidence, and build performance skills. Available adult programs will include private and group lessons as well as jam sessions for those wanting to play music while meeting new people.
“We have clients who have been asking for us to consider a location in Manatee County for quite some time,” Music Compound owner Jenny Townsend says. “We have students who have been commuting for years from Parrish and Lakewood Ranch. And even with the addition of new studios at SRQ, we can’t keep up with demand!”
Music Compound was founded in 2016 by Jenny Townsend. The Cattlemen Road location started with just one teacher and four studios in just 1,800 square feet. “My goal in founding this business in 2016 was to be more than a place where people took music lessons – I wanted to create a music community,” Townsend says. “Over time, we have built a place where member families and staff feel like a part of our family, where instructors adhere to certain standards but have the creative freedom to express their own passion, where aspiring artists of all skill levels can gain confidence that will carry them throughout their lives, even if they don’t pursue music professionally. I feel so fortunate to be able to love coming to work each and every day.”
Music Compound MAN offers lessons for children ages 3 and up in piano, vocals, guitar, bass, drums, violin, woodwinds, ukulele, and digital music as well as a band program for teens. Kids are grouped according to skill level and preferred genre (for younger kids there are Jr. Rockerz and Kidz Rock offerings), musical theater, songwriting classes, and the Gulf Coast New Horizons Music program for adults ages 50+. Available adult programs include private and group lessons as well as jam sessions for those wanting to play music while meeting new people.

UF/IFAS Extension Manatee County’s Residential Horticulture Program is hosting a community-wide scavenger hunt to celebrate Florida Arbor Day, Jan. 20.Participants can explore Emerson Point Preserve, Conservatory Park, The Nest at Robinson Preserve, and Downtown Bradenton’s Riverwalk while searching for trees with a TreeQuest tag. Once found, participants can scan the QR code on the tag to open an online survey where they will be asked to enter information about the tree and register an email address for the chance to win prizes. In addition to the QR code, each tag will have information about the specific tree including its common name, scientific name, and environmental impact. TreeQuest encourages residents to get outside and enjoy local parks while learning about tree species native to Florida and their benefits.

The Bay Park Conservancy (BPC), the non-profit organization responsible for designing, developing, managing and operating 53 acres of City-owned land along Sarasota Bay into a signature public park, has elected new Executive Committee Officers. Jennifer Compton, Managing Partner and Vice Chair of Shumaker, has been elected Chair of the Bay Park (The Bay) Conservancy (BPC) Board of Directors. Jennifer is one of the founding members of the Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization (SBPO) and subsequently served as Secretary for the BPC. She is recognized for using her legal and leadership acumen to create a first-of-its-kind private/public partnership agreement between The Bay and City of Sarasota. This partnership was instrumental in supporting The Bay Park Conservancy’s initiatives to develop the precious city-owned land along Sarasota Bay into community park. Cathy Layton, previously BPC Board Chair from December 2016 through December 2022, has been elected Chair Emeritus. During her tenure as Chair, Cathy oversaw what was initially only a vision of what “could be” transformed into the reality of a world-class park - with the October 2022 opening of The Bay Phase 1 to an estimated 50,000 people. Emily Walsh, President of the Observer Media Group, has been elected Secretary of the BPC Board. Walsh joined the Board in 2019. Rob Lane, Managing Shareholder of Kerkering Barberio, continues to serve as Treasurer of the BPC Board. The Bay transforms 53 acres of the city’s precious bayfront into a world-class destination offering an open and accessible, free and welcoming gathering place for everyone to experience and enjoy. The BPC is at an important juncture as it balances operating, maintaining and programming the first 14 acres of The Bay park (Phase 1) with excellence, while also designing and building the next 14 acres of park (Phase 2) that continues to delight park guests from around the region. The completed park will cost about $150-200 million and will take between 7-10 years, over 3 or more phases. Phase 2 development of the park is expected to begin as early as Spring 2023. A Decade of Collecting brings together a survey of artworks acquired for the permanent collection over the past eleven years. As the State Art Museum of Florida and a division of Florida State University, The Ringling’s collections are constantly expanding to provide our state and local community with access to current contemporary works in all media and thoughtful additions to our historic collections. Though the core of the collection has always been the works acquired by John and Mable Ringling, the museum’s holdings have been expanding ever since the State of Florida took full possession of the bequest in 1946. In the early years, these additions were mainly in pre-1800 European art and circus-related material, but over the second half of the 20th century, directors and curators also began acquiring works by modern and contemporary artists. A Decade of Collecting presents a unique snapshot of how The Ringling’s collection continues to evolve, allowing us to tell new stories of the past, present, and future. This walking tour led by volunteer guides will introduce you to interesting botanical specimens on the estate while providing a historic overview of the development of the estate. The Ringling Arboretum has been accredited at Level II through ArbNet and there are over 2350 trees within the arboretum representing native, exotic, historical, and culturally significant trees. Garden Tours are available Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays and take place entirely outdoors. It is 90 minutes in length and covers approximately 1 mile. We encourage visitors to bring bottled water, and wear appropriate footwear, preferably closed-toe, sunblock, and hats. There will be a maximum of 10 participants per tour. Tours are subject to weather conditions. Please check it at the Visitors Pavilion prior to your tour. Tickets will be available 30 days prior to each tour.
The Same Source exhibit by Luca Molnar uses various media to explore the connection between historical figures and personal mythologies. The exhibit highlights the connection between private life, domestic spaces and memory. Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) is hosting its annual golf tournament, Scramble for SPARCC, at the Laurel Oak Country Club on Monday, January 16, 2023. With the support of sponsors, community donations and golfers, this tournament raises funds to help provide life-saving, free and confidential programs and services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Entry fee is $185.00 per person and includes green fees, individual carts, happy hour light bites, beverages (cash bar available) and player awards. Registration opens at 11:00 AM with a shotgun start at 12:30 PM to kick off the 18-hole scramble. In addition to the golf tournament, there is also a closet to the pin contest, closest to the line contest, golf ball launcher, 50/50 chance drawing, and awards celebration.
