This weekend, head down to Bradenton to catch Almost, Maine, from the Sunshine State Theatre. The production, which runs from Friday evening through Sunday, is not only the debut performance from Bradenton’s only professional nonprofit theater company but also the first play to be held at Oscura in old downtown.
“My business partner Jalex Scott and I have known each other since we were 18 and went to college together,” says Janet Raines, the executive director of Sunshine State Theatre and director of this weekend’s production of Almost, Maine, the most produced play in America. "It’s done so often because it’s one of those stories that you can identify with no matter where you are in life. Everybody knows a little bit about love and that’s what this play is about – the magic that love brings when it's going well and when it’s not. There’s a little bit of that magic in the air with this show.”
Fittingly enough, magic is the theme of Sunshine State Theatre’s debut season, as this new theater company pushes to bring live entertainment to the forefront of people’s minds once again. “Preserving that magic was one of the most important things for when Jalex and I started this theater. One of the things that I love about theater is that there’s nothing that can replicate live entertainment,” says Raines. “While we all love good content and have gotten accustomed to watching stuff on our couch, we wanted to be part of the movement to be a little more of a community. We wanted to make sure magic is always felt in the air and we promise that every time round this year we’ll have a show that illustrates why we fight for our community and why we fight for live entertainment.”

Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s and Key Chorale will offer the free voice strengthening program series, the Off-Key Chorale, beginning in January. The Off-Key Chorale provides an opportunity for individuals with Parkinson’s disease to improve and strengthen their voices through singing and provides a fellowship activity for people whose social opportunities are often limited by this disease. Celebrating its 10th year, the Off-Key Chorale kicks off the winter season with music from “The Times They Are A Changin” rehearsing every Thursday at 10:45am from January 12th – March 2nd at a new location -Senior Friendship Center at 1888 Brother Geenen Way in Sarasota. This program is offered at NO CHARGE and is comprised of people living with Parkinson’s, family members, caregivers, and volunteer singers from Key Chorale. The Players Centre presents the Pulitzer Prize winning play, Proof by David Auburn, Jan. 12-22, 2023 at Studio 1130-The Crossings at Siesta Key (3501 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239). Directed by Kelly Wynn Woodland, with Stage Manager Diane Cepeda, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play, Proof is a passionate, intelligent story about fathers and daughters, the nature of genius, and the power of love. On the eve of her 25th birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. The composer George Crumb (1929-2022) has been celebrated as one of the 20th century’s most adventurous and exceptional composers.ensembleNewSRQ (enSRQ) pays tribute to him with “George Crumb Tribute: Remembering an American Icon and Those He Influenced,” a concert showcasing two works, “Black Angels” and “Madrigals,” by the trailblazing composer. The concert also features the emotionally powerful “Demeter Prelude” by Crumb’s protégé, Margaret Brouwer. Renowned soprano, Lucy Fitz Gibbon returns to sing Crumb’s evocative “Madrigals.” The concert is Sunday, January 16, 7:30 p.m., at First Congregational Church, 1031 S Euclid Ave, Sarasota. Art Center Sarasota’s 2022-2023 exhibition season continues with four exhibits, February 2-March 11. In “Same Source,” Luca Molnar uses various media to explore the connections between historical figures and personal mythologies. In “Both Ways,” Eugene Ofori Agyei works with earthenware or stoneware clay, African fabrics, acrylic paint, and yarn to create ceramic sculptures and wall pieces that start a dialogue about identity and home. Marlon Tobias’ paintings celebrate precious moments in Black family gatherings. The Annual Juried Members Show is juried by Mary Moscatelli, CEO of Venice Art Center. On Saturday & Sunday, January 21 – 22, Key Chorale’s Chamber Singers, professional harpist Anna Kate Mackle, pianist Stephen Fancher, and the Sarasota Music Conservatory String Quartet, will present a concert of miniature masterpieces – all 8 minutes or less – pint-sized pieces that pack a punch. While Classical composers have often wowed us with large-scale symphonies, masses, and Requiems, they have also demonstrated their mastery in a matter of only minutes. Experience these choral miniature masterpieces – all 8 minutes or less – as Maestro Caulkins leads an interactive exploration of these miniature masterpieces. Spanning nearly 450 years, these works from the Renaissance to today will be not only performed but discussed in an entertaining and informative way throughout the program.Contemporary classics like Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium will be performed and contrasted with a setting of the same text in a timeless work by Spanish Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria. Another work by contemporary Latvian composer Eriks Esenvalds takes an ethereal poem by Sara Teasdale and sets it for 8-part choir and wine glasses tuned by partially filling them with water. The playing of these wine glasses adds to the mystery. Players wet their fingers and run it around the rim of the glass creating a halo of sound unlike any other. Key Chorale is excited to welcome the Sarasota Music Conservatory’s string quartet with musicians Margaret Toth, Selena Shen, Coach Sean O’Neil, & Matrick Thorpe. Harpist Anna Kate Mackle will join Key Chorale as a soloist performing the enchanting and beautiful Cantique de Jean Racine by French composer Gabriel Faure. The program rounds out with two spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan, who died tragically at the young age of 45 in 2003. In that short span he became the world’s greatest arranger of spirituals. His settings transformed spirituals into a highly regarded artform. His arrangements of My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord and The Battle of Jericho are among his finest, and true masterpieces. The performances will take place: Saturday, January 21, 4:00 PM at Church of the Palms; Sunday, January 22, 5:00 PM at St. Boniface Episcopal Church. Tickets are $35-$45. The Parkinson Place Center will host these new classes every Monday at 1:30 p.m., beginning on Jan. 9. The benefits of Brain, Balance and Ballet classes include increased balance, enhanced coordination, strengthened expansive movement and technique and improved rigidity.
