On Tuesday night, the Bradenton Marauders, Single-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, opened their six-game homestand with a walk-off win in extra-innings against the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Single-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. The Marauders, who at 22-18 are eight games back from the lead in the Florida State League West division, needed the win as they had dropped five of their last six games to the division leading Clearwater Threshers.
Tuesday night’s victory came in dramatic fashion for the Marauders. Owen Kellington, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Amatuer Draft by the Pirates, got the start for Bradenton, going four innings while allowing two earned runs off of three hits and two walks. Kellington, owner of a 4.39 ERA and 0-1 record on the year, received a no decision for his start.
After trailing for much of the game, the Marauders evened the score in the sixth inning at 2-2, courtesy of a Temarr Johnson RBI single. The game stayed knotted at two runs a piece until the bottom of the 10th inning, when with the winning run a third base, the Hammerheads bobbled a routine pop fly to shortstop from Pirates 26th ranked prospect Shalin Polanco, allowing the winning run to advance from third base.
The Marauders have three different promotional nights taking place over this homestand including Thirsty Thursday on May 25, Mental Health Awareness on May 26, and Military Appreciation Night on May 27.
