Shumaker Partner and Technology Business Sector Chair Douglas A. Cherry has been appointed to the recently formed Committee on Cybersecurity and Privacy Law of The Florida Bar, where he will help further thecommittee’s mission to facilitate attorney awareness of cyber risks on a continuing basis. The Committee on Cybersecurity and Privacy Law will work jointly with the Technology Committee and other committees to develop a series of firm- or attorney-appropriate cybersecurity best practices and to provide Florida attorneys with a continuously updated resource of cybersecurity law and regulations, news events, and focused educational seminars. In addition, the committee intends to provide Florida attorneys with resources addressing other state’s cybersecurity privacy laws and the European Economic Association’s cross-border General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Board Certified in Intellectual Property (IP) Law, Doug is known for taking complex principles and making them understandable for his clients. His areas of concentration include IP (patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, publicity rights, and unfair competition) consulting, acquisition, licensing, and litigation, as well as technology, cybersecurity, and data breach law. Doug represents corporations, municipalities, nonprofits, start-ups, and entrepreneurs in a variety of industries, including technology, health care, law enforcement, and manufacturing. Doug has extensive litigation and mediation experience involving high profile, corporate technology cases and intellectual property litigation. He is a founding member of Shumaker’s Data Breach Team and provides seminars on issues of cybersecurity and data breach avoidance/response.
