[Philanthropy]  Spirit of Manatee Awards Spotlight, Remember Nonprofit Leaders
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Nonprofit community came together last week to celebrate some of the region’s leaders at the Spirit of Manatee awards.

The Manatee Community Foundation hosted the event on Wednesday at the Bradenton Area Convention Center. There, awards were given to five individuals and organizations in the community in a celebration spotlighting the importance of giving and improving lives for others.

The Sertoma Club of Bradenton, which helps individuals with hearing and speech disabilities, was awarded with the Community Spirit Award after being nominated by Turning Points.

Other awards went to individuals. The Charles Clapsaddle Community Spotlight Award went posthumously to Johnette Isham, the founding director of Realize Bradenton. Isham died in August.

“Johnette loved downtown Bradenton and this love had a significant impact on downtown Bradenton’s small businesses and arts and cultural organizations,” Carrie Price, Realize Bradenton’s chair.

Realize Bradenton nominated Isham for the honor. “Johnette would tell anyone who listened that she lived downtown, worked downtown, shopped downtown and ate downtown,” said Karen Corbin, who succeeded Isham as the organization’s executive director.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Lorenzo Liberti received the Young Spirit award. That was for the Sarasota Military Academy graduate’s work with local charities including Manatee Children’s Services, Suncoast Charities for Children, Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Turing Points of Bradenton (the organization nominating him).

H. Lawrence Clark received the Leadership Spirit Award and was nominated by Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County and Pace Center for Girls.

Amanda and John Horne, area restaurateurs and prominent philanthropists, received the Mary E Parker Lifetime Spirit Award. Pace Center for Girls, Manatee, The Patterson Foundation’s Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, Suncoast Blood Centers and Tidewell Foundation all recommended the Hornes for the honor.

[Voting]  League of Women Voters of Sarasota County Upcoming Event

On April 8, 2024, from 6pm-7pm, at the Selby Library Gelbart Auditorium,  the League of Women Voters of Sarasota County will present a panel of experts in the healthcare field to discuss the role of the SMH Board and how their decisions might impact the future of medical care in our community. Currently there are two candidates of the same party running for Hospital Board At Large Seat 1 and for Central District Seat 1. That means the August Primary could become a Universal Primary, making it the final election for these two seats. In that case, all voters would be able to vote;  thus filling two of the four seats on this nine-person board. At Large Seats 2 and 3 will be voted on in  November. According to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, “Of nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals evaluated every year,  SMH has repeatedly been recognized in the “50 Best Hospitals” for at least one medical specialty and rated among the nation’s top 10% for other high performing specialties, conditions and procedures.”  (August 1, 2023). It is the responsibility of the Hospital Board to maintain or improve upon this level of excellence.  Our panelists will cover all the issues at play in this year’s SMH Hospital Board elections including privatization of our public nonprofit hospital. Our panel of experts include: Sandra Stuart, Sarasota Memorial Hospital Foundation. Former Assist. Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs, Kirk George Voelker, MD. Pulmonologist, Medical Director of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s Clinical Research Center, and Alan Unell a researcher of healthcare systems and policies and who publishes the daily newsletter “Healthcare Advocacy”. This event will also be live-streamed on our Facebook page where a recording will be posted. For more information and to register for in person attendance visit LWVSRQ.org.

[Preservation]  Manatee County to Pursue Emerson Point Preservation Expansion

The Manatee County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted unanimously to purchase a 97-acre parcel of land adjacent to the existing Emerson Point Preserve for conservation. Staff presented updated figures showing the comparative value of the property to be $14.6 million while the latest asking price is at $15.5 million. District 3 Commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge made the motion to instruct staff and the County Attorney to pursue negotiations at the $15.5 million price with the seller and report back to the board, saying “I look forward to completing this whole parcel.” “We’ve always wanted to do this,” said Manatee County District 5 Commissioner Ray Turner, addressing the conservationists and concerned citizens who lined up to urge commissioners to make the purchase during the public comment period. Every other member of the BOCC spoke of their passionate support for preserving this additional portion of Emerson Point. “I’m in full support,” said At-Large Commissioner Jason Bearden. “This is important,” said District 2 Commissioner Amanda Ballard. “I’m excited to support the proposal.” “I think this is going to be a great addition,” said District 1 Commissioner James Satcher. “I am glad we were able to move forward and expedite the matter,” said At-Large Commissioner George Kruse. Finally, commenting on the unanimous vote, Commission Chair Mike Rahn said, “We’re on track.” Final details of the deal will be presented to the BOCC after negotiations have been completed. JournalDoc delivers an optimal number of highly relevant peer-reviewed journal articles, and they can be sure they are receiving current, accurate and reliable results because there are direct links back to the original abstracts,” said Dr. Nelson.
The company’s platform is also suitable for medical students, researchers, and proactive patients. “We didn’t build this for doctors and researchers alone. Many patients and their families are scouring the internet daily for information and JournalDoc.com is a resource that filters the internet and can give them accurate results right away,” Dr. Nelson said.
