"We are thrilled to be involved with Night With The Stars Prom this year and help create lasting memories for individuals with disabilities who may have never had the opportunity to attend a high school prom before."
The Bradenton Marauders may have gotten off to a slow start this April at 1-8, but there is still plenty of incentive to head on over to LECOM Park and catch a game. For one, the team is loaded with up and coming young talent. Between MLB Pipeline and Baseball America six of the top 30 prospects in the farm system are currently on the Marauders’ roster. The 10-team Florida State League represents a crucial juncture in the development of young players. The Single-A level is the first real taste of Minor League competition that these players will face after graduating from the Florida or Arizona Complex Leagues. If a player can make it past Single-A and into High-A–for Bradenton players that would mean moving up to the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League–then they have a real shot at eventually cracking the Major League roster.
Watch prospects like third baseman Garret Forester, a 2023 third round draft pick out of Oregon State or infielder Jesus Castillo, one of just eight players in the Minor Leagues to walk over 100 times last year, while you still can. With strong seasons, both of them could be playing for the Greensboro Grasshoppers by August.
Additionally, this weekend is jam packed with promotional nights at LECOM Park. Every year, Marauders General Manager Craig Warzecha and his team gather together to brainstorm different opportunities, first among themselves and later with other Minor League organizations. New to the organization this year is Friendly City Fridays, a promotion that will promote local nonprofits and businesses throughout the summer. In a nod to Major League Baseball’s City Connect jerseys, the Marauders will wear their all-new Friendly City Friday jerseys that sport “Bradenton” in a script font across the chest during these games. This Friday’s game will also host a Women in Sports discussion panel pre-game and is the team’s first Kids Club game, in which kids 12 and under can run the bases post-game. Other promotional nights on this homestand include Thirsty Thursday, Margaritaville Night on Saturday night’s game–in which the Marauders will sport specialty Margaritaville-themed jerseys–and a Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Sunday’s game, where the Marauders will rebrand to the Bradenton Barbanegras for the day.

Since 2009, nonprofit organization Night With The Stars Prom, Inc. has helped Sarasota and Manatee County residents of all abilities, ages 16 and up, to enjoy a fabulous – and free – prom. This year’s event, themed “Night at the ‘50s,” is taking place in mid-April at Woodland Community Church in Bradenton. There are expected to be over 450 guests and caregivers in attendance. Night With The Stars Prom is a nonprofit organization run solely by volunteers. Everything for the prom is donated by companies and members of surrounding communities, from the red carpet at the entryway to the decorations, desserts, table service, music, and photos. The volunteers ensure that suits and prom dresses – with accessories – are available at no charge for those guests who attend special try-on events, and alterations are also provided. There are also individuals who donate their time and talent by doing hair and makeup for the guests. This year, Goodwill Manasota became involved in the effort, donating 45 gift cards to its retail stores so that prom guests could shop for clothing, shoes and accessories. In previous years, guests had to be brought to a storage facility to try on donated clothing; now, they are getting to enjoy a special shopping trip with lots of options. “We are thrilled to be involved with Night With The Stars Prom this year and help create lasting memories for individuals with disabilities who may have never had the opportunity to attend a high school prom before,” said Goodwill Manasota President and CEO Donn Githens. “At Goodwill, we believe that individuals with disabilities should have the same access to work and play as others may take for granted. We have been happy to provide formal wear for this year’s Prom guests and hope they will have a fantastic time!” McDevitt is already looking for a new venue for next year’s event: Woodland Community Church has generously provided the venue at no cost for over a decade but the event has outgrown the available space. She is also seeking to bolster the organization’s volunteer base, as the disruption and health concerns due to the pandemic greatly reduced her available manpower. “Every detail of the prom is provided by the generosity of people in the community through their time and contributions of money, goods, and services. We appreciate the participation and generosity of Goodwill this year – it has given our guests the opportunity for a real shopping expedition that I know they enjoyed,” said Night With The Stars Prom president, Mary Anne McDevitt. “I always urge those who contribute to the effort to come and see what they’re donating to – you’ve never seen so much love in one room! Our guests walk in and they’re just so happy.”

The Ringling unveils the newly restored Watermelon Regatta painting on view for a limited time only. Over seven years ago, conservators at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art began a comprehensive examination of the Watermelon Regatta, a fascinating early 18th-century Italian painting that had suffered significant damage. This extended study led to a painstaking conservation treatment that commenced in 2017 and has been carried out intermittently since that time. The painting conservators at The Ringling were assisted by several conservation Interns and Fellows, as well as contracted conservators. This oil painting on canvas has been attributed to The Master of the Fertility of the Egg, a name used by art historians for an as-yet unidentified painter active in northern Italy around 1700. His works typically represent the world reversed, with animals doing things that humans do. His absurd compositions satirize the madness, vanity, and ridiculous folly of human life, but in a spirit of comic levity and fun. To learn more, visit ringling.org.
