[Politics]  Republican Party Fights for Traditional Americans
Jack Brill

With a big primary season behind us, we are now entering the home stretch of one of the most pivotal election cycles in U.S. history. We face a choice between the Republican Party, which represents the rule of law, secure borders, low crime, protecting individual freedoms, economic prosperity and competent governance, and the Democratic Party, which supports open borders, mass immigration, soaring crime, chaos and shutting down free speech.

Victory up and down the ballot for traditional America is at stake and the Republican Party of Sarasota County is geared up and ready to support all our candidates at every level to ensure that we have victory for regular Americans. In fact, we have 24 candidates on the ballot in Sarasota County, from President Donald Trump down to Charter Review Board to city elections and to the amendments on the ballot, and we are ready to make sure every one of them wins.

With our popular conservative ideas, strong leadership and relentless work, Republicans now own the biggest voter registration advantage in Sarasota County history, and it just keeps growing. Voter registration as of Aug. 30, 2024, according to the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections office:

• Republican: 156,475

• Other: 86,608

• Democrat: 86,132

• Total: 329,215

No one is accidentally choosing Republican. More are because the Democrats have lost their way, to put it mildly, and the Republican Party stands against the tide of leftist globalism.

But all the work of actually electing Republicans remains, and the RPOSC is working daily to do that. The key is getting voters to the polls — whether by mail, in early in-person voting or on Election Day. We have a robust ground game to accomplish this, including Super Saturdays where we marshal our strong volunteer base to go door-knocking throughout the county, run phone banks, publish Voter Guides, send mailers and make sure we are at every polling place when voting is going on.

All of this work pays off. Our voters really turn out. In a normal Presidential general election, the average voter turnout around Florida is about 75%. But the average turnout of Republican voters in Sarasota County is about 82%.

This sort of turnout is why Sarasota County is such an essential element in Florida Republicans winning. We run up the score here to make up for other areas. Each time President Trump has been on the ballot, he has increased his margin of victory in Sarasota County, and we expect that to happen again in November. Sen. Rick Scott will win big with Sarasota County’s help. We look forward to returning all of our incumbents and electing our new candidates to office Nov. 5.

[Politics]  Democrats Lead the Charge for Change in Sarasota
Daniel Kuether

As a member of the Sarasota community, I have never been prouder of what we've accomplished together in this recent election cycle. Liz Barker’s and Tom Edwards' victories in the Sarasota County School Board elections, along with Manny Lopez's primary win for the U.S. House and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell's for the U.S. Senate, are proof that our community is ready to prioritize unity, education and the common good over the divisive politics that have plagued us for too long.

Liz Barker, a mother of four Sarasota public school students, represents the best of our community. By defeating incumbent Karen Rose with over 51% of the vote, she achieved a personal victory and a win for those who prioritize our children's education. Her words resonate deeply with many of us, reflecting a readiness to move beyond the politicization of education and focus on our kids' futures.

Tom Edwards' victory, securing over 55% of the vote against two challengers, rejects extremism in our school board elections and demonstrates that his leadership of the past four years is respected and valued. With Liz and Tom on the board, Sarasota's educational community can look forward to a stable, supportive environment.

I'm excited about Debbie Mucarsel-Powell's primary win with 80% of the vote in Sarasota County. She will challenge Republican Sen. Rick Scott in November, advocating for reproductive rights, economic justice and democracy. Manny Lopez also won and will challenge Republican Greg Steube in the 17th Congressional District, offering a clear alternative to the extremism seen in Washington. Both candidates represent the change our state needs.

As I reflect on these victories, I'm reminded of the power of collective action. Our wins were not just the result of strong candidates but of a community united in its desire for a better future. I saw volunteers knocking on doors, making phone calls, and engaging with voters — a Democratic Party that punched well above its weight.

Looking ahead to November, I'm confident we can continue building on this momentum. The Democratic Party of Sarasota County is committed to offering the community the finest candidates. Derek Reich, a school teacher, is running for FL House D73; Nancy Simpson, a municipal policy planner, is running for FL House D74; and Tony Dunbar, an attorney, is running for FL House D75. We also endorse Barbara Ford-Coates for re-election as Tax Collector, a trusted figure in Sarasota for decades, and a slate of Hospital Board candidates with over 100 years of combined and relevant experience.

The recent election results have shown me, and I hope they've shown you too, that when we stand together, guided by our shared values of unity, education and the common good, real change is not only possible—it's inevitable. Sarasota is leading the charge for change, and with your continued support, we can finish what we've started.

Daniel Kuether is the Sarasota County Democratic Party chairman.
