Tuesday Dining and Food Edition

"I researched and developed our bread for two years and baked almost every single day just to get it right."

- Nick Sammelman, Chef/Owner, Focaccia.

[The Dish]  Rise and Shine
Kate Wight, kate.wight@srqme.com

Since debuting in early 2024, Focaccia has quickly become a favorite destination for diners craving fresh, artisanal lunch fare in Sarasota. Known for its hearty sandwiches, comforting soups, flavor-packed salads and of course for its signature fresh-baked focaccia bread, the eatery offered a savory and satisfying midday menu. Now, there’s even more to love about Focaccia: as of October 1st, the restaurant is now serving breakfast, too.

“One of the best things on bread is an egg sandwich,” says Nick Sammelman, chef/owner of Focaccia. “I researched and developed our bread for two years and baked almost every single day just to get it right. I had bread everywhere all the time. I would do a ton of stuff with it, but an egg sandwich was my go-to and I never got tired of it. I still eat one every morning.”

There are a few variations of the egg sandwich at Focaccia. The Egg + Cheese Sandwich comes with white cheddar cheese, garlic aioli, and arugula, while the Bacon + Egg Sandwich comes with white cheddar, garlic aioli, avocado, and porchetta bacon. There’s even a Steak + Egg Sandwich with garlic aioli, white cheddar and shaved prime rib. Focaccia also offers their own twist on trendy Avocado Toast - theirs is topped with piquillo pepper puree, microgreens, radish and dill. In the mood for something simple? Try the Focaccia Scramble with a side of Breakfast Potatoes. In the mood for something a little more elevated? The Focaccia Benedict is as elegant as it is delicious.

Focaccia is now open from 8am-4pm Tuesdays through Saturdays. Breakfast is served between 8am and 11am, and lunch is served from 11am to 4pm. The restaurant is closed Sundays and Mondays. While Focaccia has been running with limited power after recent storms, they are now fully operational and serving their full menu plus specials during their regular hours.

[Hurricane ]  A Message from Goodwill Manasota

To our valued sponsors, I hope that you are all safe and doing well! Before the hurricane, we made the decision to postpone our “Community Ambassador of the Year Awards Luncheon,” originally scheduled for this Thursday, the 17th. An email was sent out at that time and it will be sent again at noon today. I wanted to personally reach out to make sure that you know about the new date of the event, in case you did not receive the initial communication. The luncheon will be held on Wednesday, December 4th. Everything else remains the same: Michael’s on East from 11:30am-1:30pm. We are very thankful to each of you for your support of Goodwill and our local mission in the community! Most importantly, stay safe and please reach out at any time if we can be of assistance. Warm regards, Pavitra Ciavardone, Director of Community Engagement.

[Hurricane ]  Nate's Honor Hurricane Milton Recovery Update and Request For Help

We are incredibly grateful to report that all animals and staff at Nate's Honor Animal Rescue Center are safe following Hurricane Milton. Thanks to our amazing community of fosters, the majority of our animals were able to find temporary homes before the storm hit. The four animals who remained at the shelter braved the weather without any issues. While the shelter itself sustained minimal physical damage – trees and debris impacted some of our kennels, fences are down, and a few roof panels are damaged – the power outage caused more significant losses. We tragicallylost all of our refrigerated food, medications, and diagnostic supplies needed for to serve the over 100 animals in our care. These losses alone cost us thousands of dollars and have set us back as we work to recover. As we continue to clean up and restore our operations, we ask for your support. Your donation today is essential in helping us rebuild and replace what was lost so that we can continue providing the best possible care for our animals. We can't do this without your help.

[Hurricane Relief]  Hurricane Milton Update and Important Information from Operation Warrior Resolution

Hurricane Milton affected so many lives in Florida. I hope that everyone stayed safe and knows that together we can get through anything. If you're like most of us at Operation Warrior Resolution, you've experienced a wide range of emotions. We've gone from losing our nonprofit facility in Debby, to having employees lose their homes in Helene, and now with the State of Florida struggling as a whole while we recover from Milton. I worked as a volunteer over the weekend to pack and hand out food at a distribution site in Sarasota. It was incredibly humbling. This is where you see firsthand, the enormity of the aftermath, and just how many people are suffering. Yet, most all of them were in good spirits with lots of gratitude for a hot meal. Over the weekend, our team has been in the community helping with cleanup, provide supplies, putting tarps on roofs, and volunteering to provide food at distribution sites. Also over the weekend, our therapists were doing what they do best, providing mental health, brain-based healing, trauma treatment to veterans who needed it during these times. Operation Warrior Resolution is here to provide mental health support at anytime, please click the link below to get started with brain-based healing. We also recognize that those we serve have other immediate crisis needs such as storm clean up, food, supplies, temporary housing, gas, etc. We are trying to assess the greatest needs for those in our OWR community, outside of mental health services, so please respond back to this email to let us know where else you need support. Other organizations for hurricane relief assistance: 2-1-1 Disaster & Recovery Services, United Way Suncoast: Disaster Recovery Services, Season of Sharing, Hope Florida. Together we are rebuilding and growing stronger as a community. We are here to support veterans and their families in their time of need--we are here for you every step of the way.

[Hurricane ]  Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Risk from Improper Generator Use in Wake of Hurricane Milton

In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, thousands of residents across our region are relying on portable generators due to widespread power outages. Manatee County is issuing a critical safety warning to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, as several cases have already been reported from improper generator use in garages and enclosed spaces. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can be deadly if inhaled in high concentrations. Portable generators emit large amounts of CO, which can build up quickly in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces such as garages, basements, or homes—even if doors or windows are open. Within minutes, dangerous levels of CO can accumulate, leading to poisoning or death. Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning can include: dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, weakness, shortness of breath. If you or someone else experiences any of these symptoms while using a generator, turn it off immediately, get outside to fresh air, and call 911. Generator safety guidelines: NEVER use a generator inside your home, garage, basement, or any enclosed space—even if doors or windows are cracked open for ventilation. Place the generator at least 20 feet away from your home and away from windows, doors, and vents. Use battery-powered CO detectors on every level of your home, particularly near sleeping areas, to alert you if dangerous levels of carbon monoxide are present. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and ensure your generator is properly maintained. Refuel the generator when it has cooled down and avoid using it in wet conditions to prevent electrocution hazards. For more information, please continue to monitor the County's social media accounts for updates. Official storm information from Manatee County is always updated at mymanatee.org/storm.

We understand that the upcoming week may pose challenges for some families. While we are all eager to return to our routines, our schools and systems require additional time to reset for normal operations fully.

We are finalizing adjustments to the 2024-25 school year calendar to account for the recent school closures. We will keep you informed as more information becomes available. If your family is facing circumstances that prevent your child from returning to school for an extended period, please know that we are here to support you. Please contact your school directly, and we will work with you to ensure your child's educational needs are met during this time. We appreciate your continued partnership in promoting our students' educational well-being and supporting our school communities. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during these times.

The past weeks have been incredibly challenging as we navigate the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and Milton. Each of you has faced various barriers, and your strength during this time has been remarkable. We understand the emotional and physical toll these events can take, and we want to acknowledge your hard work and dedication in supporting one another and our community. A heartfelt thank you to all who were assigned to or volunteered for emergency duties in evacuation centers last week and those who have taken on "other duties as assigned" before and after Hurricane Milton. Your efforts have been invaluable to our community's recovery. In light of these challenges, we want to ensure everyone has clear guidance for the week ahead:

Tuesday, October 15: Instructional and classified personnel return to their work sites.
Wednesday, October 16: Students return to district-managed schools. This will be a regular school day.
Thursday, October 17: This will be a regular school day.
Friday, October 18: This day remains a Professional Day (non-student day). Students and 186-day staff will not be in school, and no district activities will be scheduled as originally planned.

Please take a moment to complete and submit the Staff Support Survey (link) if you still need to do so. Your feedback will help us ensure that everyone who needs additional support can access the necessary resources. We are committed to accommodating anyone facing significant challenges as they prepare to return to work. If you anticipate difficulties or require accommodations related to your work, please contact your supervisor to discuss appropriate options. The district leadership team is actively working on adjustments to the 2024-25 school year calendar in response to recent school closures. The school calendar committee will convene this week to finalize plans, and we will promptly share the updated calendar once it is finalized.
Again, Thank you for your dedication to your colleagues, our students, families, and the community. In the weeks and months to come, we will continue to support each other and rebuild.

[Hurricane ]  Hershorin Schiff Community Day School Open for Students and Families Following Hurricane Milton

Hershorin Schiff Community Day School is proud to be among the first schools in Sarasota County to reopen after Hurricane Milton, providing essential support for students and relief for parents following a challenging week of storm impacts. According to Head of School Dan Ceaser, the school’s design and construction, completed in 2019, prioritized safety and security. Key features include dedicated underground power, advanced IT infrastructure, and multiple backup power systems. While the campus experienced some cosmetic damage, such as impacts to fences and trees, it sustained no significant damage and never lost power. Recognizing the challenges many residents face in the storm’s aftermath, the school is implementing an excused absence policy for students unable to attend due to transportation issues. To help ease the transition back to school, lunch will also be provided for all students, faculty, and staff on the first day back. Ceaser emphasized the school’s strong community spirit, especially the staff’s dedication to ensuring the highest level of service when students and parents need it the most.

[SOON]  GALLERY: Open Book , October 1 – October 25, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

The lines between books and art are definitely blurry; books inspire artists of all kinds whether it is a remarkable quote that becomes part of a painting, an inspiring passage that touches the spirit and guides the artist while they create, or even a sculpture made of books. Our language even coined phrases like “read me like an open book.” Artists are asked to share their interpretations of an “open book”.

[SOON]  GALLERY: The Artist's Journey , October 29 – November 22, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

We are all on a journey in this life; some are just beginning, while others are entering the twilight of their quest. Along the way, we encounter bumps, triumphs and hopefully, joy and transformation. Artists are asked to share their journey, which can include but is not limited to: travel, vacation, personal journey, healing journey, exploration, progress, roaming, or voyage.
