"I know it's really easy to shop online and just click buttons without taking your wallet out, but our local business community really needs your support, love and compassion right now."
This Saturday, October 19 from 10am-3pm the Spotlight is on Limelight Market. This fun, pop up market happens in the courtyard of The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime with rescue dogs, unique guest vendors, food and live music. Check out the 40+ local creators and curators inside. It’s all free, until you buy something amazing.
Kim Livengood, co-owner and operator of The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime and Hamlet’s Eatery says she’s glad to be getting back to regular operations this week and grateful for the support of her vendors and the incredible community. The Bazaar, like many other local businesses, has struggled with the recent storms in the area these past few months. “We were flooded really badly from Debby and that was our most extensive damage,” shares Livengood. “After that, we became much better at preparing for storms. We now have so many sandbags and for Milton, we added tarps along with the sandbags. So right now, we are dry and we just need to clean up the debris and put furniture back.”
With Hurricane Milton, the Bazaar lost power and although the lights came back on after a few days, Livengood says everyone was just too exhausted to get right back to business. “The whole Bazaar family needed time to regroup and get organized so everybody's coming in this week to set up and clean up and get reorganized in time for Saturday.”
In addition to sharing her gratitude, Livengood wants to stress the importance of supporting local business, especially during trying times like this. “Not just the Bazaar, but for every local business, it's more important than ever to shop local. I know it's really easy to shop online and just click buttons without taking your wallet out, but our local business community needs your support, love and compassion right now,” she says. “I think one of the things the Bazaar does best is that we've created this community for everybody to come out and feel loved and welcomed. It doesn't necessarily mean shopping--it's just really special being part of that community.”
The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime is located at 821 Apricot Ave, Sarasota.

Given the widespread destruction due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, and understanding that recovery will likely take much time, Project Pride SRQ has made the difficult decision to cancel the Gulfcoast Pride Festival & Street Party on October 19, 2024. After reaching out to event supporters and vendors, and through communications with the City of Sarasota, it was clear that holding the event would be extremely difficult from a logistical standpoint. Project Pride SRQ has been buoyed by the outpouring of love and support it has received. In keeping with its organizational mission to return and amplify this love back to the extraordinary community it serves, the organization will continue to host other events, celebrations, and programs through the end of this year and beyond. "We look forward to bringing Gulfcoast Pride back – bigger, better and even more fun – at a later date, to be determined," said PPSRQ President Jason Champion. "We want the community to know that if there is anything we can do to help support them through this difficult experience, not to hesitate to reach out and let us know." For more about Project Pride SRQ and its programs and events, visit ppsrq.org.

On Wednesday, October 9, Hurricane Milton made landfall in Southwest Florida as a category three hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. Within 24 hours, Englewood Hospital, which had transferred patients to other HCA Florida Healthcare hospitals to ensure their safety, reopened hospital and emergency room operations on Thursday, October 11, 2024. HCA Florida Englewood Hospital has approximately 416 colleagues and 91 volunteers, many of whom were affected by the hurricane. "I am incredibly proud of how our Englewood Hospital colleagues have responded in the wake of Hurricane Milton," said Joe Rudisill, chief executive officer for Englewood Hospital. "Even though many were faced with devastation, others may not yet have power in their homes, our caregivers are showing up to work with unwavering commitment to the care and improvement of human life." Twenty-four hours after the storm, Human Resources and Supply Chain teams mobilized to set up an on-site fuel station, mini-mart, ice truck and other resources to support the hospital's colleagues. Over two days, HCA Healthcare distributed more than 2,800 gallons of fuel, food, cleaning supplies, baby formula, ice and other supplies to 190 colleagues and their families. In addition to wellness checks on each colleague in the path of the storm, a representative from the Employee Assistance Program was on-site to provide one-on-one support to those dealing with the storm's aftermath. Lemon Bay High School baseball players, cheerleaders as well as Venice High School and Florida Gulf Coast University students showed up to support the relief efforts. They helped set up the distribution site, handed out ice and supplies, and visited with those affected by the storm. The baseball players volunteered to assist the efforts at a second location, HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital. Long-time hospital employee Carolyn Exelby said, "When a hurricane strikes, it's important that our hospital responds quickly to the needs of our community. We are so grateful for more than 50 community volunteers and colleagues who provided their time to support us. They showed up to help our frontline team so that we could take care of our community when they needed us the most." Additionally, the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund, a 501(c)3 public charity, stepped in to offer support and emergency funds to colleagues. The Hope Fund is run by colleagues, for colleagues. To date, the Hope Fund has surpassed $100 million in grants awarded since its founding. "Having these resources available for our HCA Florida Healthcare family lets our caregivers know that we are taking care of them and their families, so they can show up and provide outstanding care and emotional support to our patients," said Joe Rudisill, chief executive officer for Englewood Hospital. The hospital also donated 250 cases of baby formula, diapers, cleaning supplies, flats of water and other resources to the distribution center being managed by the local Rotary clubs to help with the community relief effort. For more information, please visit HCAFl.

The Hermitage Artist Retreat today announced a modified program schedule for October and November following the impact of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. Despite the damages to the Hermitage campus on Manasota Key, the planned program with Broadway veteran Britton Smith will be moving ahead this Thursday at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Downtown Sarasota. The Hermitage and Selby Gardens have jointly decided to move forward with this special event to celebrate the resilient spirit of our community in this time of healing. “Let the Music Set You Free” is scheduled for Thursday, October 17 at 5:30pm. This program kicks off the fifth anniversary of the “Hermitage Sunsets @ Selby Gardens” series and features Broadway veteran, Tony Award winner, and 2023 Hermitage Greenfield Prize finalist Britton Smith. The bandleader for the alternative soul band Britton and the Sting, this visionary artist and advocate is a force of nature determined to unite the world through a passion for music and theater. This event is being presented in partnership with Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and DreamLarge. (The Hermitage has arranged alternative artist accommodations and studio space due to campus damages.) Hermitage programs are free and open to the public (with a $5/person registration fee), offering Gulf Coast audiences a rare chance to engage and interact with some of the world’s leading talent. Running time for most Hermitage programs is 60-70 minutes with no intermission. Due to capacity limitations, registration is required at HermitageArtistRetreat.org. The Artful Lobster, the Hermitage fall benefit scheduled for Saturday, November 9 from 11:30am to 2pm, will be relocated from the Hermitage campus to the newly finished outdoor courtyard of the Ora in Sarasota. This outdoor celebration will be the first event to take place in this beautiful open-air venue, and funds will go to support the Hermitage’s core programs and hurricane repair efforts. All sponsors and attendees will receive further details from the Hermitage, and additional sponsorships for this fall fundraiser may be purchased by contacting Development@HermitageArtistRetreat.org or (941) 475-2098, Ext. 2. With the exception of these two events on October 17 and November 9, all other Hermitage programs and events through November 17 have been cancelled. Registrants will be contacted by the Hermitage. At this time, all remaining programs in November and December remain open for registration at HermitageArtistRetreat.org.

HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital has experienced an increase in residents seeking mental health treatment after Hurricane Milton. The hospital has the only voluntary, acute care, behavioral health program in the area that specializes in the unique needs of older adults ages 48 and older. Emma Ballantine, LCSW, Director of Behavioral Health says, “Natural disasters like Hurricane Milton can lead to acute stress reactions including anxiety, depression, PTSD, substance use, and insomnia. Disruptions in community support systems can make these conditions worse, particularly among vulnerable populations like the elderly and those living on a limited income. It is important to prioritize mental health to help people recover and rebuild”. Ballantine will be available to offer additional comments at the time below. Additional details: Ballantine offers these top three tips to help with mental wellness after traumatic weather events like hurricanes: Stay connected: Reach out to your loved ones, community members, and professionals. Talk about how you are feeling and create strategies to overcome obstacles as a team; Take care of the basics: Ensure that you are getting proper nutrition/hydration and sleep. Avoid alcohol and substance use. Get back to your normal routines where possible; Give yourself grace: Accept how you are feeling and give yourself space to grieve losses. Take breaks from social media and news feeds that may be triggering.

Like all of you, we are grieving for our community and the difficulties being faced by so many in the aftermath of Milton and Helene. For all who have been touched by these storms, please know that our hearts are with you. Below, we've compiled a list of resources for those in need as well as ideas of no or low cost ways to help our neighbors during this time. It is as a community that we will work together, heal, and rebuild. Damage at our Sarasota and North Port locations is still being evaluated, and while we wait with baited breath for updates and estimates for repairs, we recognize the immense good fortune of being able to report that our staff are unharmed and determined to clean up and dive back into services so our little survivors have the support and resources they need. Rain, shine, or flood- we refuse to let victims of child abuse suffer further and are committed to help them find healing and safety. We will not be deterred.
EVENT POSTPONED - As our community continues to recover from hurricane damages, we have decided to postpone the Celebrity Bartender Challenge. A date in the near future will be announced shortly.

We believe in the power of unity and culture to heal and look forward to a truly magical NocheUnidos! If you have already purchased tickets, you will be contacted by The Ringling’s Box Office to either hold your ticket for a future date, or to receive a full refund.

The lines between books and art are definitely blurry; books inspire artists of all kinds whether it is a remarkable quote that becomes part of a painting, an inspiring passage that touches the spirit and guides the artist while they create, or even a sculpture made of books. Our language even coined phrases like “read me like an open book.” Artists are asked to share their interpretations of an “open book”.

Enjoy the extraordinary opportunity to experience the work of contemporary artist Shinique Smith in conversation with the collection of European art at The Ringling. Unfolding across six galleries of the Museum of Art, the exhibition creates a series of unique stories that together form an abstract narrative of the parade as a metaphor for life. Well known for her monumental sculptures created from an array of materials, including luxurious textiles, personal clothing, dyed fabrics, ribbon, and wood, and for her abstract paintings of calligraphy and collage, Smiths work in this exhibition speaks to various facets of the European artistic tradition, such as classical drapery and religious iconography, while foregrounding notions of Black femininity and the history of the circus. And of course, we can’t forget the appearance of one of the most famous ghosts in America, the Headless Horseman. This story is based on the short story by Washington Irving.
