Friday Weekend Edition
"There is a lot of humor in this play, but there are also a lot of beautiful relationships that happen and changes that occur in them throughout the story."
This Friday marks the regional premiere of Jennifer, Who Is Leaving at Sarasota’s Urbanite Theatre. The play, written by Morgan Gould, is best described as a poignant, feminist dramedy that explores the relational boundaries of caregiver and patient; father and daughter and husband and wife. Set in a desolate Dunkin’ Donuts on the side of a Massachusetts highway, Jennifer, Who Is Leaving follows three women desperately trying to escape their current circumstances: Jennifer, a caregiver who is being pushed to her limit by her disorderly patient, Nan, who is just trying to work the night shift while fielding constant calls from her incompetent husband and Lili, a high school student who’s forced to work at Dunkin’ by her controlling father, the night before taking the SATs.
The only problem? They can’t escape–the Dunkin’ is socked in by a blizzard, forcing the characters to confront their plights head on. “This particular play is so funny but it’s also biting, it leaves you thinking and is a huge reflection on society and roles that people take on within it. Roles that we inherit, roles put on and see ourselves working through the world and the demands placed on women as a whole,” says Summer Wallace, Producing Artistic Director at Urbanite Theatre. “The characters are put in situations that they normally might avoid, but they can’t. There’s a lot of humor in this play, but there are also a lot of beautiful relationships that happen and changes that occur in them throughout the story.”
Wallace, who plays the titular Jennifer in the show, was struck not only by the strong thematic elements of the play, but also by the wit and humor in Gould’s writing. “This play made me laugh out loud just by reading it. Morgan’s stage directions alone are hilarious. She describes characters in a way that you totally see them. You know who this person is,” says Wallace. “There is an incident that occurs between the caregiver and her patient, Joey, this exchange that they have and a physical situation that occurs that is one of the funniest things that I’ve ever read. When just reading her stage directions makes you laugh, then you can only imagine what it’s going to be like on stage.”
In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, Urbanite is running a free ticket promotion for the Friday October 18 and Saturday, October 19 shows. Type MILTON at the ticket checkout for one free ticket to the first weekend of performances.

SARASOTA, Fla. – Governor Ron DeSantis visited Sarasota’s Booker High School on October 17, 2024, to announce the distribution of $500,000 to education foundations in five counties affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. This award, part of a broader $1.5 million relief effort, is aimed at supporting schools and teachers impacted by the recent storms.
During the event, Governor DeSantis highlighted the resilience of Florida schools, which faced significant challenges after Hurricane Milton. The Governor praised local officials and education staff for their swift recovery efforts, noting the critical role schools played in providing shelter and support to the community. “We are less than a week away from when the storm left the state, and all school districts in the state of Florida are back to normal operations today, so that's a very quick turnaround. That's a very good job here in Sarasota where you had the storm’s main landfall. I thank everybody that’s been involved with that—I know it’s not easy, but I know that the students are better off for it.”
Booker High School, which served as a shelter for over 2,000 residents during the storm, became the backdrop for the Governor’s announcement. Superintendent Terry Connor of Sarasota County Schools spoke about the importance of restoring normalcy for students and staff. “We served over 38,000 meals during that time. and so the contribution [of] our administrators, our custodial staff, our food and nutrition services, who have to sacrifice their personal challenges … is heroic in what they do,” Conner said. “I had the privilege to walk the schools yesterday … and as I walked those classes, I saw the smiles on the teacher’s faces, on the student’s faces; they wanted to be back.”
Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. echoed the importance of getting students back into the classroom quickly. “School is obviously the best place for students, especially after hurricanes. We've dealt with three hurricanes already during the school year,” Diaz stated. “It's important to get students back not only because there's air conditioning and hot meals but also they have the ability to be with their teachers and have those conversations, and to get right back in academics so there's no academic loss.” He applauded the Governor’s leadership and the collaborative efforts of state agencies to reopen schools in record time.
Jennifer Vine, President and CEO of the Education Foundation of Sarasota County, discussed the immediate needs of teachers and school staff. “The first priority was making sure we can get teachers back to work and all of the essential school district personnel back to work,” she said. Vine explained that many educators are still dealing with personal losses, from damaged homes to childcare issues. The $100,000 grant from the Florida Disaster Fund will help address these challenges, providing essential relief to teachers and students alike. “I hate to say that we’ve become experts at relief and recovery,” Vine remarked, referencing past hurricanes.
State Senator Joe Gruters (District 22) praised the resilience of the Sarasota community and expressed gratitude for the Governor’s leadership. “We can't be more proud of the job that everybody did as a community coming together, and it shows you how resilient we are to be able to get the schools back opening and operating within seven days of when the last storm left the state. The governor deserves a lot of credit. I'm glad he's staying on top of this and bringing attention to so many different areas of need because we still have a long road ahead.”

Sarasota Youth Opera is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year by reprising its production of Canadian composer Dean Burry’s The Hobbit™. Burry wrote the music and the libretto for the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus in Toronto, which performed it in 2004. Sarasota Youth Opera first presented The Hobbit™ (the American premiere) in 2008 and then again in 2014. The Covid pandemic precluded a 2020 production. Sarasota Opera had commissioned Burry to write the orchestrations, as the original was written for piano only. This fantastical story, a prelude to Tolkien's classic, The Lord of The Rings, recounts how a comfort-loving hobbit, unwillingly dragged into a heroic quest, accidentally acquires the golden ring of power. Right from the start, the cast has been rehearsing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as all day Saturday. Collins said that once they are closer to the actual performance dates additional rehearsals are sometimes scheduled. Collins has had a successful career as a professional opera singer and directs Sarasota Opera mainstage productions. But she relishes her work with her opera kids. Lead performers include Isabella Maltese as Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit; Luke Harnish (a Sarasota Opera resident artist) as Gandalf, the wizard and Smaug, the dragon; Giuliana Bordes as Thorin, leader of the dwarves; Finley MacBeth as Elrond, the elf-lord; Zane Hancock as Azog, the great goblin; Nikolina Supe as Amarlind, the elf maiden; and Ovid Rawlins as Thranduil, king of the wood elves. To celebrate Youth Opera’s 40th anniversary, the company has been working to contact all alumni to invite them to a special reception. Any former Youth Opera member interested in attending should email youthopera@sarasotaopera.org. The Hobbit™ will be performed on stage with orchestra at the Sarasota Opera House.

Florida Studio Theatre invites audiences to indulge in delicious small-town secrets, sweet friendships, and unexpected romances with Waitress, the heartwarming Broadway musical that received Tony and Olivier Award nominations for Best New Musical. Featuring music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles and book by Jessie Nelson, Waitress is directed and choreographed by Ben Liebert. The production opens on November 8, 2024, and runs through December 29, 2024, at FST’s Gompertz Theatre, with previews beginning November 6. Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a waitress stuck in a loveless marriage who also happens to be an expert pie maker. When a nearby baking contest offers her the chance to escape, Jenna seizes the opportunity to reclaim her long-forgotten self. Supported by her fellow waitresses and an unexpected romance, Jenna begins to find the courage to follow her dreams. The New York Times calls it “about liberation, empowerment, and pie – three things that are easy to wholeheartedly endorse,” while The Washington Post praises the show’s “disarming charm and a ton of heart” as it blends humor and heart in a way that’s both touching and uplifting. “Waitress is one of those great new shows with a catchy pop-folk score, lots of laughs, and characters you fall in love with,” says Liebert, FST resident Director. “Jenna, our titular waitress, see her dreams slipping away, her home life falling apart, and a baby entering her life. She inspires us to make the tough choices and find the resilience in ourselves to keep on going, all in a musical that goes down as smooth as a chocolate cream pie.”

At a press conference yesterday, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the Education Foundation of Sarasota County is receiving $100,000 for hurricane relief for public schools in Sarasota County. This award is designated to the recently established Hurricane Relief and Recovery Fund, a partnership between the Education Foundation and Sarasota County Schools, to accept monetary donations supporting the local school district and its nearly 5,300 employees.Sarasota County was hit with an unprecedented trio of hurricanes between August and October. Debby caused severe flooding and damage in the eastern parts of the county, followed by Helene, which devastated barrier islands and coastal communities, with Milton coming in two weeks later making landfall over Siesta Key, bringing horrific destruction with the back end of the storm. Full assessment of damages to schools is underway and will be ongoing as district officials are able to receive updates from teachers and school support staff. Several schools operated as emergency shelters before and during the hurricanes. In addition to debris removal on each campus and comprehensive cleaning and disinfecting required for each building, individual classrooms may need repairs and basic supplies replenished. Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, and Pinellas counties received disaster funding to support their public schools as well. With its consistent “A” rating, Sarasota County Schools’ priority is to clean up and restore campuses quickly, so teachers and students can settle back into their routines and pursue the high level of operations and learning that has come to be expected in our community. The Hurricane Relief and Recovery Fund will help in these efforts to regain some sense of normalcy for students’ immediate and long-term recovery needs. There are many ways to donate to the fund. Online giving may be made to the Hurricane Relief and Recovery Fund atedfoundationsrq.org/hurricane-relief-and-recovery-fund via credit card, PayPal, or Venmo. Donors who wish to mail contributions are asked to make checks payable to the Education Foundation of Sarasota County and include Hurricane Relief and Recovery Fund in the memo field. Checks can be mailed or dropped off at the Education Foundation’s LaunchPad4U location in the Rosemary District, north of downtown Sarasota, at 1413 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota, Fla., 34236, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The lines between books and art are definitely blurry; books inspire artists of all kinds whether it is a remarkable quote that becomes part of a painting, an inspiring passage that touches the spirit and guides the artist while they create, or even a sculpture made of books. Our language even coined phrases like “read me like an open book.” Artists are asked to share their interpretations of an “open book”.

In "pouring, storing, and ore-ing," Amy Sanders employs utilitarian objects, focusing on vessels designed for pouring and storing. These everyday items are imbued with layers of meaning beyond their functional roles. Pouring vessels symbolize abundance, charity, and generosity, while storing vessels convey themes of containment, preservation, and prosperity. The concept of "ore-ing" references the primitive essence of the iron ore colorants that decorate these vessels, connecting them to the earth's elemental origins.
