"Sun Lab is kind of a seed that I planted in my head many years ago, something that I always wanted to start up. I was finally able to do that in the fall of 2019."
On Friday, October 25, SRQ MEDIA hosted its 9th Annual Together We Roar Leadership & Awards Luncheon at Michael’s on East to recognize exceptional women in the region. The celebration featured a pop-up boutique salon with fabulous gifts from local businesses, including Bookstore1, Bia Candle and Simply Jo's Boutique.
The ceremony opened with welcoming remarks from Lisl Liang, President, CEO/ Editor in Chief of SRQ Media Group who thanked event sponsors, Micheal’s on East, Saks Fifth Avenue, The Ritz Carlton Sarasota, Diamond Vault (for crafting the coveted Women Who Roar pin), Sarasota Trophy and Awards, Dolphin Transportation Specialists, Leaders Uplifted, Brsh Salon and Tropical Interiors Florist. She introduced champion partner/sponsor, Steve Altier of United Community Bank and producer sponsor, Ivory Matthews of Neal Communities and then went on to recognize the ambassadors of the Women Who Roar Leadership Circle who were in attendance at the event.
Ashley Grant, SRQ Media’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Engagement then took the stage to introduce stand up comedian, podcaster and social media star, Elyse DeLucci, recipient of the 2024 SRQ Women Who Roar Illuminator Award, described as a woman who inspires others to live life with gusto. “Mix a dash of Mrs. Maisel with liberal shots of Fran Drescher in The Nanny and you have the essence of DeLucci’s special sauce,” said Grant. “Part best friend, confidant, honorary Italian mother, she is an absolute treasure.”
The 2023 Trailblazer Award was later presented to Kate White who has made a name for herself as a trailblazing writer, editor and speaker. “If there were ever an ambassador for the philosophy of Go Big or Go Home it would be Kate White,” Grant said.
Following the award acceptance speeches, Blair Bloomston, Founder & CEO of Leaders Uplifted, one of the most respected firms in communication, leadership and team building training, and a fabulous Leadership Circle ambassador took the stage to lead the audience in an energy-boosting interactive presentation. The special afternoon came to a close with the presentation of the 2024 Leadership Circle awards.

Sun Lab Brewing had its official grand opening this past weekend, but it’s a business that has been taking root for quite some time.
“I’ve been in the beer business for over twenty years,” says Sun Lab founder Keith Fekete. “Sun Lab is kind of a seed that I planted in my head many years ago, something that I always wanted to start up. I was finally able to do that in the fall of 2019.”
Sun Lab started off as a nomadic brewery, brewing beer at other facilities and putting it straight into distribution. But the ultimate goal was always to have a brick and mortar location with a taproom and brewery. After delays brought about by Covid and rising real estate prices, Fekete was finally able to open the doors to his new taproom in July of 2024. Fekete’s plan was to soft launch the brewery and taproom and do a grand opening earlier this month. Those plans were pushed back in the wake of Hurricane Milton. Fekete turned lemons into lemonade (or hops into IPA if you’d prefer a more thematic metaphor) used this weekend’s rescheduled grand opening to raise funds for The Blessings Bags Project, a local nonprofit organization. Funds raised will support hurricane relief efforts in the Cortez village area.
This community-minded approach is reflective in the atmosphere at Sun Lab, which Fekete describes as “super chill, very friendly”. There’s a small stage where the brewery hosts weekly open mic nights as well as performances from hyperlocal and independent musicians. Even the beer is easy to drink. Sun Lab specializes in hazy IPAs and fruited sours, which are perfect for the Florida heat. The brewery has three year-round selections available: a crisp and refreshing blonde ale called Sun Faze, a citrusy double dry-hopped hazy IPA called Sun Haze, and a sour ale called Sun Craze that is packed with juicy berry flavors. Sun Lab is also constantly featuring new specialty beers which are typically made once and then never again. Current offerings are Liquid Visions, a hazy IPA with tropical vibes and Stacks of Sunshine, a sour ale with sweet and tangy strawberry, passion fruit and peach.
While Sun Lab doesn’t serve food, the Coastal Smash food truck is permanently on-site ready to serve up flavorful smash burgers to go with the innovative beers. Sun Lab Brewing is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4pm-8pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm-8pm, and Sundays from 12pm-6pm. It is closed on Mondays.

With many neighborhoods and walk-ways still burdened with post-hurricane debris, The Ringling will host a free, safe and enjoyable family-friendly Halloween experience. On Thursday, October 31, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., families can enjoy trick-or-treating in costume throughout the Museum of Art’s Courtyard. Guides will offer tours throughout the Museum of Art’s galleries for a special spooky-themed “seek and find.” Art making opportunities will be offered and The Historic Asolo Theater will host vintage Halloween short films. This is one of several ways that the education team at The Ringling has been activated after Hurricane Milton. Last Saturday, The Ringling hosted a Free Family Fun Day where more than 75 participants joined in art-making activities where they turned debris from the hurricane into art works. The education programming team also put together art kits to give away to families through local organizations, each of which found a way to distribute them to their community members. “We realized that although schools and learning centers reopened, many students still did not have power at home and could benefit from some free art materials to create a sense of normality during a time of adjusting,” says Giovana Pérez-Oliveras, the Arts and Health Program Coordinator at The Ringling. Those partner organizations include, Blue Butterfly, Forty Carrots, Soar in 4, ALSO Youth, Easterseals Academy, Easterseals Preschool, Fruitville Library, The Historic Leonard Reid House, Sarasota Housing Authority, Jacquelyn Paulk Campus Learning Center, Betty J. Johnson North Sarasota Library and Starlabs. “Then a few other organizations distributed them to their clients/patients,” Pérez-Oliveras notes, such as Lighthouse Vision Loss Education Center and Senior Friendship Centers. After Hurricane Milton, The Ringling opened its doors again on Monday, October 14, and senior leadership quickly moved to offer free admission through Wednesday that first week back, to make the respite of art available and as accessible as possible after such a devastating month of storms. The Museum of Art, The Tibbals Learning Center (which houses the circus model), The Grillroom and The John M. McKay Visitor Center are open to the public daily. The Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion is open to the public and is always free. Regularly scheduled family programming is always free including ROAR, a free storytime that connects art with early literacy; Family Art Making; Stroller Tours; Homeschool Third Thursdays; and Ringling Reflections, which are relaxed, conversation-based gallery tours in the Museum of Art followed by artmaking for people with memory loss and their care partners. As with all of our local arts centers here in Sarasota, the best way to support is by visiting and enjoying all the arts that Sarasota has to offer. For more information and to register to attend the free Halloween program, visit: https://www.ringling.org/event/halloween-at-the-ringling/

Following an initial groundbreaking in March 2023 and a ribbon-cutting ceremony in early October, Manatee Memorial Hospital (MMH) is pleased to announce the official opening of Manatee ER at Palma Sola on Tuesday, October 29, at 9:00 a.m. After completing a comprehensive life safety survey on October 25, the Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) has approved the new facility to welcome patients. Residents of western Bradenton and its barrier islands, recently impacted by two major hurricanes, now have convenient access to emergency healthcare close to home. Like the Manatee ER at Bayshore Gardens, the Manatee ER at Palma Sola offers prompt, efficient care with short wait times and 24/7 access to an ER physician, ensuring both local citizens and first responders’ access to timely emergency services. Located at 633 75th Street West in Bradenton, the new Manatee ER at Palma Sola will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide care for all ages. The 10,884 square ft. facility includes six exam rooms, three rapid medical spaces and full-services laboratory, x-ray and ultrasound areas. The Manatee ER at Palma Sola marks Manatee Memorial’s second freestanding ER in Manatee County, after opening the Manatee ER at Bayshore Gardens in April of 2023, and its third overall with the ER at Sun City that opened in 2022.
In more than four decades living in Florida, I’d never previously experienced the eye of a storm during a direct hit. That this storm, Hurricane Milton, was the second major tropical weather system to impact our region in less than two weeks made the occasion all the more surreal.
Hurricane Helene’s vicious flooding and the combination of whipping winds paired with pounding rain during Hurricane Milton devastated the lives and livelihoods of so many citizens of this area, the state of Florida and beyond. While our campus did not escape unscathed, it resumed normal operations within a week of the storm, with employees back at work and students returning to dorms and classrooms.
Some of my proudest moments though came in the days following the storm, as New College served as a distribution site for Hope Florida and the several affiliated state agencies that came together to elevate our community. Food, water, fuel, diapers, baby wipes and many other essentials were distributed to thousands of local residents.
The turnout was humbling. These storms came in rapid succession, testing the limits of our neighbors, yet the response was swift and unified.
Part of New College’s long-term success hinges on the College playing a larger role in our community. We aim to support local residents in need, bolster our relationships with the cultural groups promoting music and the arts, provide stimulating guest speakers and entertaining intercollegiate athletics and perform scientific research to make us all better stewards of Sarasota Bay. We are doing all of these things, but in those moments immediately following Milton, it was important that we help meet some of our community’s most basic needs.
Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis entrusted New College with hosting relief efforts during a very uncertain time. Several of Florida’s strongest leaders came in person Friday to make sure the site was up and running, including Secretary of Commerce Alex Kelly, Dept. of Children and Families Sec. Shevaun Harris, Dept. of Juvenile Justice Sec. Dr. Eric Hall, and Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation Melanie Griffin, among others. The Governor and his wife visited the relief site as well, offering encouragement to men, women and children who needed to hear someone has their back.
Many of our staff volunteered their time, even as their own homes awaited power or their own debris clearance. Their commitment to helping others in those difficult moments was a testament to the strength of this community. Over the course of just a few days, thousands of residents received the relief they needed to begin rebuilding. The storms remind us that our greatest achievements lie not only in classrooms and labs but in standing side by side with our community and neighbors when it matters most.
At New College, we are building something special—a stronger curriculum, a growing student body, and an engaged faculty—but for those few days following the storm, our only mission was to be the safest, strongest partner for our community’s safety and wellbeing. Together, we have weathered a few storms now, and we will continue to grow, learn, come together and thrive in this beautiful city we are all proud to call home.
Richard Corcoran is President of New College of Florida.

Performed on and near Sarasota Bay, this unique collaboration between Louisiana-based Mondo Bizarro and the Land Memory Bank & Seed Exchange combines the twin influences of art and education to involve citizen audiences in Invisible Rivers. Part procession, part performance-art talk, Invisible Rivers is a project that uses music, theater, and boatbuilding to bring their experiences from the rapidly changing coastal region of southeast Louisiana. Using a pontoon stage, the artists work with the local community hosting classes, dialogues, and performances on the “float lab” to elaborate stories of our region's interconnected struggles against coastal land loss, environmental racism, and displacement in the land we love.
