"We are overwhelmed by the support from the community, and we hope to welcome even more teams to help us honor Chad's memory and support Tidewell Hospice."

- Joann Day-Dormeyer, Co-organizer, Chad Day Memorial Fishing Tournament.

[Fundraising Event]  Seventh Annual Chad Day Memorial Fishing Tournament
Barbie Heit, barbie.heit@srqme.com

Chad Day was only 23 years old when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer, and after 17 months of intense treatment, he was just 24 when he passed away. During his final weeks, Chad received compassionate care from Tidewell Hospice. Despite her worries about the cost of such care, his mom Joann never received a bill from Tidewell.

In honor of Chad's strength, memory and his passion for fishing, Joann and her husband Alan organized a tournament to raise funds for the Tidewell Foundation, which directly benefits Tidewell Hospice. This event has since become a cherished springtime tradition, drawing the community together to remember Chad and make a tangible difference for others in need of similar care.

"It's incredible to see how this event has grown," says Joann "We are overwhelmed by the support from the community, and we hope to welcome even more teams to help us honor Chad’s memory and support Tidewell Hospice." Alan notes that the most challenging part of this event has been attracting enough fishing teams to participate. “We have been getting 10-14 teams each year and our goal is to have 20-25 teams."

This year, the tournament will be held at Tarpon Bay Grill & Tiki Bar, located at 7150 Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. Festivities will officially kick off after the captain’s meeting on Saturday, April 5, with the final picture submissions due by 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 6.

The family-hosted gathering will feature a catch-and-release fishing tournament on Sarasota Bay, along with raffle prizes, a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing. Over 30 raffle baskets, handmade by the family and filled with items generously donated by the business community, will be on display, with the total worth of the items exceeding $10,000. Several silent auction items will also be available for bidding. Cash prizes will be awarded for placing in each species of fish, giving teams 11 chances to win. One lucky team will have a chance to win up to $3,700. With $78,000 already raised, this year's event aims to surpass the milestone of $100,000 in net proceeds.

[Recognition ]  Hugh Culverhouse Jr. Honored at SRQ's Good Hero Luncheon
Barbie Heit, barbie.heit@srqme.com

Each year, SRQ Media invites the community to nominate individuals with hearts of giving who have made a significant impact with local nonprofit organizations — from volunteers and board members to individual staff members and donors. This year, attendees were thrilled to be together as we recognized these individuals at our annual Giving Coast and Good Hero Awards luncheon and panel discussion on Tuesday, January 28 at Michael’s on East in Sarasota. In the coming weeks, we are happy to feature each of the ten honorees in our Wednesday Philanthropic edition of SRQ Daily.

Today we are recognizing Hugh Culverhouse Jr., who has been hailed for his generous philanthropic spirit and his unwavering commitment to championing respect, hope and understanding in our community. His belief in art as a catalyst for social change has inspired others to take action and his contributions have opened doors for young people to engage in meaningful discussions on prejudice, acceptance and respect—introducing them to perspectives they may not have encountered otherwise. His philanthropy ensures that these conversations continue to grow and resonate, creating a ripple effect that extends well beyond the classroom. Embracing Our Differences says that Hugh Culverhouse, Jr’s transformative contributions and generosity sustained the organization during a challenging time. “Hugh’s support has had a profound impact on our mission to create a more inclusive world through art and education. His substantial financial contributions, which addressed a critical public funding gap, enabled us to continue our annual outdoor art exhibition and broaden our educational outreach, benefiting thousands of students and teachers throughout the region. Hugh Culverhouse Jr.’s visionary leadership has not only shaped the future of Embracing Our Differences but has also strengthened our community by promoting empathy, understanding, and unity. His steadfast support has allowed us to thrive, even through challenging times, and his dedication to social justice has inspired many to follow his example."

[Early Learning Coalition]  Storybook Street 2025: A Record-Breaking Celebration of Literacy

The 5th annual Storybook Street swept through Ed Smith Stadium in February 2025 with a record-breaking crowd and an unforgettable morning of literacy, creativity, and community spirit. This open, first-come, first-served event reached capacity within just 30 minutes, as more than 1,100 attendees filled the beloved ballpark, eager to explore the immersive world of books, arts, and science. Families traveled from six surrounding counties to take part in this one-of-a-kind experience. Created and hosted by the Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County (ELC), this free, family-friendly event is designed for children ages birth to seven. Distributing an incredible 8,000 books, the ELC helped build home libraries and inspire a lifelong love of reading in young children. With the help of 18 arts & science partners and 50 volunteers, families experienced hands-on activities, live performances, and interactive exhibits that brought books to life. Pulling off an event of this scale is an incredible feat for such a small coalition—a dedicated team of just 20 staff members. Their passion and commitment to early literacy continue to make a lasting impact on our area’s littlest learners. The overwhelming enthusiasm for Storybook Street confirmed its status as a must-attend event for families with little ones. Due to the unprecedented demand, organizers have already pivoted in planning for next year to find ways to serve more families as the event heads to south Sarasota County in 2026.
