Sarasota CIty Commissioner Paul Caragiulo on Tuesday will raise the issue of re-appointing City Commissioner Shannon Snyder to a board both had to resign from to run for higher office. Caragiulo on Tuesday defeated Snyder in the Republican primary for Sarasota County Commission District 2. Florida's resign-to-run law required both city commissioners to resign their posts effective in November in order to run for the county commission. The resignation, effective in November, cannot be rescinded. However, the City Commission is allowed to re-appoint the same person to the vacated post. "It would make a lot of sense, providing he wants to do it, and there is only one way to find out," Caragiulo said. "My intention is to keep things relatively stable." Snyder could not be reached for comment. Of course, the Sarasota City Commission before the primary already laid out a plan for finding replacements to fill both Caragiulo's and Snyder's seats on the board. The city will begin accepting applications for the post starting Tuesday and the commision planned to make the appointment in November, after both commissioners leave the board. Caragiulo faces independent Alexandra Coe and two write-in candidates in the county commission election, escheduled for Nov. 4. Sarasota, Manatee Realtors Consider Merger
Leadership for the Sarasota Association of Realtors and the Manatee Association of Realtors voted today to merge the organizations. Members for both groups will decide if such a move should take place in mid-September. The membership vote will be held in each associations' offices on Sept. 16 at 1pm. "The reality today is that the perceived barrier between Sarasota and Manatee counties has eroded and we are now one regional marketplace," said Sherry Grooms, MAR President. "Merging the two associations allows us to eliminate duplication and operate more efficiently and cost-effectively." "We are stronger together," said SAR President Peter Crowley. "By combining our more than 5,000 members, we will become a stronger voice for our profession, which allows us to be more effective in advocating for property rights. It also gives us increased representation, and therefore more clout, at the state and national levels of the organization." Leaders said the merger has been discussed for two months. The move, according to board members for both associations, would both save on resources and boost the market prominence in MLS searched and within such associations as Florida Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. If approved, the change would take place Jan. 1 and the merged association would be rebranded as the Suncoast Realtor Association. Such a change would also need the blessing of the National Association of Realtors for the new organization to be recognized as a new association. Carpenter, Kennedy Win Manatee School Board.
