Sarasota Police Deputy Chief Stephen Moyer was appointed on Tuesday as the next Secretary of Public Safety and Correctional Services for the State of Maryland. Gov. Larry Hogan made the appointment. Moyer has accepted the post and begins in late January. “This is a prestigious appointment and an honor for him. We would never want to hold him up from this amazing opportunity," said Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino. "Our loss is the State of Maryland’s gain. The Deputy Chief’s departure will leave the Sarasota Police Department with a loss but our agency will continue to move forward and continue to succeed in fighting crime and engaging with our community and continue to keep the City of Sarasota one of the safest cities in the nation." Moyer will oversee more than 11,000 employees in the new post and a $1.3 billion budget. Moyer first came to the Sarasota Police Department in April 2013.
