Venice Police believe they have found the body of missing ex-City Councilman David Sherman. Police Chief Tom McNulty said a body was found north of the Pinebrook Park fitness trail, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. While the medical examiner's office will verify identity, McNulty said items on the person indicate it is Sherman, who was reported missing on Feb. 7. Sherman lost a bid for re-election to the Venice City Council in November to Deborah Anderson. Police said interviews with those close to Sherman indicate he was suffering financial problems and was taking the loss of the election very hard, but that most relatives believed he was moving on. In fact, police were focusing significant energy on the theory Sherman had simply walked away from his life; relatives indicated Sherman had disappeared in the 1980s for six and a half years without making any contact with family. But while foul play was ruled out early, police never ruled out the possibility Sherman had fallen in an accident or taken his own life. This morning, cadaver dogs swept wooded areas in Venice in an effort to find clues about Sherman's disappearance. That resulted in the discovery of the body in a remote area north of Curry Creek. "He had gotten into a wooded area with some dense vegeation," McNulty said. "It was my beliefe he did not want to be found." |
