The architecture community in Southwest Florida mourned the loss of Rick Fawley, a man responsible for the look of most sports venues in the region from IMG Academy to Nathan Benderson Park. His Wednesday death was announced to members of the Gulf Coast Builders Exchange through an email. Throughout the region, Fawley was remembered both for his work in the field and in shaping the collective growth of the region. "He contributed not just to the architecture community but also to the community itself," said Lisa Hess, president of the American Institute of Architects Gulf Coast Chapter. Fawley served as treasurer of that organization a few years ago. Perhaps his most notable architectural contributions in recent years were in the sports arena. A principle at the 20-year-old architecture firm Fawley Bryant, Fawley enthusiastically pursued efforts including the renovation of McKechnie Field in Bradenton and the creation of numerous buildings on campus at IMG Academy. Just last month, the firm celebrated a groundbreaking for a Finish Tower and Media Center at Nathan Benderson Park, North America's premier rowing venue. But Fawley was also involved in numerous community initiatives, supporting the establishment of form-based codes in Bradenton and working on redevelopment within the Village of the Arts. |
