    Longtime Sarasota Finance Director Dies

    Mayor Willie Shaw today announced that former Sarasota Finance Director Christopher Lyons had passed away. Lyons, a 25-year employee of the city, retired in 2012 for health reasons.

    During his time at City Hall, Lyons helped prepare 23 seperate city budgets, the past five as finance director for the city. Every budget was honored with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association.

    Upon his retirement, Lyons credited the entire team at City Hall. "Over the years, I’ve enjoyed working with many City Commissioners, several City Managers, numerous employees and countless passionate citizens," he said at the time. "I have learned many things from working with this diverse group."

    Shaw held a moment of silence today for Lyons at the start of the Sarasota City Commission meeting.
