The Sarasota Herald-Tribune and its parent company, Halifax Media, were sold to New Media Investment Group, the newspaper reported Thursday. The move comes three years after Halifax bought the newspaper and other regional publications from the New York Times Company. Halifax Media, according to its website, published 36 newspapers, most of then in the Southeast United States. The Herald-Tribune was among 16 papers purchased by the fledging media compani in 2011. The company is based in Daytona Beach. New Media Investment Group is a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. According to its website, the company is focused on investing in a portfolio of high-qulaity local media. "We are one of the largest publishers of locally based print and online media in the United States as measured by number of daily publications. We operate in over 370 markets across 27 states," reads the New Media website. "Our portfolio of products, which includes 450 community publications, over 370 related websites, and six yellow page directories, serves more than 130,000 business advertising accounts and reaches approximately 14 million people on a weekly basis." Halifax advertises that its dailies together have a combined 720,000 Sunday criculation and 635,000 daily subscription. New Media has reported it will spend $280 million in a cash transaction to buy Halifax. In 2011, Halifax paid $143 million in cash to buy the Herald-Tribune and other NYT regional papers. Bealls' Knopik Named Florida Chamber Chairman
Steve Knopik, CEO of Bealls, was announced as the chairman of the Florida Chamber of Commerce for 2014-2015. Knopik has led Bealls, a national retailer based in Manatee County, since 2006, and previously served the company as president, chief financial officer and executive vice president. "It’s an honor for me to Chair the Florida Chamber Board. I am committed to working hard with the Florida Chamber team to build upon the successes that we’ve achieved. I firmly believe that the Florida Chamber will continue to play a vital role in shaping a bright future for all Floridians," Knopik said. Knopik took the reins this month from outgoing chair Eric Silagy, CEO of Florida Power and Light. Knopik's term helming the Chamber runs through Nov. 1, 2015. He was elected by the statewide organization's Board of Directors. Normile, Zimmerman named to Sarasota City Commission
Eileen Normile and Stan Zimmerman were named to the Sarasota City Commission. "This was no easy selection because of the quality of the applicants," said Commissioner Susan Chapman. Sarasota City Commissioners made the appointment at a special meeting Wednesday afternoon. The new commissioners fill the District 2 and 3 seats vacated by Paul Caragiulo and Shannon Snyder, who both resigned to run for County Commission. Caragiulo won that election and was named to the county board in Tuesday. Commissioners Chapman and Suzanne Atwell favored Zimmerman and Normile, while Mayor Willie Shaw backed Shelli Eddie and Art Levin.
