Herald-Tribune Conducting Layoffs
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune has started laying off a number of employees, including some high-profile and long-term members of the editorial staff. The move comes three and a half months after the sale of the newspaper to New Media Investment Group as part of a $280-million acquisition of Halifax Media publications. The Herald-Tribune has not confirmed a number of layoffs and said no statement has been released by the company. Multiple sources within the publication confirmed layoffs began yesterday. Gerry Galipault, former entertainment editor for the Herald-Tribune, announced on Facebook that he was among the layoffs. He also announced he already started work for another company, PauseandPlay.com. The media website NewsandTech.com also reported sources within the newspapers reported layoffs by Gatehouse Media, the parent company for New Media Investment Group, at the former Halifax newspapers in Florida.
